We are also deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of another one of our esteemed advisory board members. Frank Daykin (July 22 1958 - June 23, 2023) fell gravely ill earlier this month, and sadly succumbed to his fight last Friday.

Frank was an accomplished pianist, musicologist, writer, and teacher, and has left a lasting impact on the world of music and those who were fortunate to know him. With a diverse range of talents and a deep passion for his craft, he made significant contributions to the art song field throughout his career.

One of Frank's notable achievements was the publication of "The Encyclopedia of French Art Song: Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, Poulenc" in May 2013. This comprehensive work has been embraced by over 235 institutions of musical higher learning, reflecting Frank's expertise and his forty-plus years as a vocal coach and recital partner. His close association with renowned artists such as Bernac, Souzay, and Ameling allowed him to accompany their master classes in the United States and abroad, further enriching his musical knowledge.

As an assistant to the esteemed French song expert Thomas Grubb at the Manhattan School of Music, Frank worked tirelessly with more than 60 singers each week, imparting his wisdom and expertise. His dedication to vocal coaching and the art of French song was unparalleled.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Frank was a prolific writer, sharing his insights through a bi-weekly arts blog and serving as a classical reviewer for the New York Concert Review. His four volumes of published poetry, including "Questions Remain: New Poems 2012/2013," "Words Without Songs," "Islands," and "I Have My Doubts," showcased his talent as a poet and his ability to captivate audiences with his evocative words.

Frank's profound connection with French piano and chamber music repertoire was evident throughout his performances. Notably, he had the privilege of performing the complete solo piano works of Ravel on Ravel's own piano at the Ravel house/museum in France. His long standing partnership of 38 years with Millette Alexander in piano duo performances yielded two award-winning recordings and garnered acclaim from audiences and critics alike. His involvement with various chamber groups, including the Adelphi Chamber Players, Ambrosia Trio, and Gotham Trio, showcased his versatility and artistry.

As a seasoned educator, Frank's teaching expertise spanned several decades. His wealth of knowledge, combined with a warm and supportive demeanor, created an ideal learning environment. Students and spectators alike were inspired by his master classes, where humor and encouragement were woven into musical exploration.

Frank Daykin's legacy will continue to resonate in the world of song. His contributions to ASPSNY as a pianist, masterclass guest artist and adjudicator have left an indelible mark. His passion for the arts, dedication to his students, and profound musical insights will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him.
Please keep Frank, his surviving husband, Gregory Lane, and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

In memoriam,

We are very deeply saddened to share news of the passing of not one but two cherished Advisory Board members and guest artists.

Corradina Caporello (Jan 24, 1944 - June 2, 2023), one of the founding advisory board members of The Art Song Preservation Society of New York. Corradina's extraordinary contributions to our organization and the field of Italian lyric diction will be cherished and remembered forever.

As an inspired teacher, Corradina dedicated nearly four decades of her life to nurturing the talents of countless students and artists. Her deep insights into language and singing had a profound impact on performances across opera and concert stages worldwide. Her teaching extended beyond singers, as she also influenced conductors, coaches, and generations of teachers who continue to carry on her invaluable legacy.

Corradina's profound commitment to teaching and her unwavering love for her students at renowned institutions such as the Juilliard School, Curtis Institute of Music, and countless summer programs and festivals made her an indomitable force in her profession. Her passion for excellence, coupled with her kind and nurturing nature, created an environment that inspired and uplifted those fortunate enough to learn from her.

At ASPSNY, we remember Corradina not only as a remarkable masterclass guest artist and adjudicator but also as a cherished friend and mentor. Her wisdom, guidance, and contagious enthusiasm will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

During this time of profound loss, our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to Corradina's family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. May we carry Corradina's spirit with us as we strive to preserve and celebrate the beauty of art song, forever grateful for the indelible impact she made upon our organization and the world of vocal education.

5 RULES FOR COLLABORATING WITH A PIANIST

1. Treat your pianist as an equal. The piano part is often at least as difficult as the string part, and several composers – Mozart and Beethoven in some of their violin sonatas, for example – regarded the piano voice as more important.

2. Give the music to your pianist well ahead of time so that you will both be fully prepared by the time of the first rehearsal. Schedule enough rehearsal time to integrate the two parts and build a convincing interpretation.

3. Know the score. The pianist has an advantage in being able to work from a score, so if you don’t know how the two parts fit together, you may potentially waste a lot of rehearsal time.

4. Work together to create a mutually satisfying interpretation. This is likely to require more discussion than the old-fashioned lead-and-follow approach, but the rewards in terms of developing an intuitive understanding of each other’s playing will be well worth it.

5. Acknowledge the pianist’s equal status in the performance. Ensure that the concert hall includes the pianist’s name and biography in the programme. Bow together, side by side at the front of the stage. Remember, the literature for stringed instrument and piano is chamber music, so a pianist in a partnership should receive as much respect as a pianist in a piano trio.

ASPS is please to share a special Art Song concert in the NYC area:

Kessa Mefford is classical pianist currently based in Westchester County, New York and her colleague, soprano Kristina Cook and has been working together for the past three years on a project to record and perform the complete art songs of Maurice Ravel. They will be performing the program at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and releasing the album in December in a culmination of these years of research and rehearsal.

The art songs of Ravel are severely underperformed; according to Carnegie’s meticulously kept online performance history archive, there are several songs they will be performing that have never been performed at Carnegie Hall. They will be the first to bring these songs in their entirety to Carnegie Hall, they may also be the first duo to bring it to any concert hall in the entire world.
To ensure harmonic authenticity, they are performing all the songs in their originally intended keys, which is possible due to Kristina’s incredible range and training as both a mezzo-soprano and a soprano. In addition, they are performing all originally intended languages or dialects. Most are in French, but there are also eight songs in eight different languages, including Galician, Limosin, Italian, Hebrew, Aramaic, Yiddish, Greek, and Scots

The concert will be Wednesday, December 14th, 2022, at 7:30PM in Weill Recital Hall.
