Have you ever walked into a room and felt the energy before anyone spoke?

That's the feeling behind Burning Desire. The red-and-black face, closed eyes, and white drips hold the heat of wanting something before we've found the words for it. I'd put this where a room needs feeling, not another quiet accent.

Which part of the face pulls you in first?

Why is art the last thing we choose for a room?

I see rooms where the furniture, rug, and lighting are all decided, and the art is left to fill whatever wall is empty. That's backward to me. Start with the work that makes you stop. Give it room to breathe, then let the rest of the space answer it.

I wrote more about that in The Collected Interior. Would you build a room around a work you love?

Guerrilla marketing as an artist looks different these days.

Today I’m sending Milton Wes Art materials directly: a one-sheet, a pamphlet, and information about the work. Sometimes you have to get off the algorithm and put your work directly into people’s hands.

Some will respond. Some won’t. My job is to make the work, put it in front of the right people, and keep moving.

Guerrilla marketing as an artist looks a little different these days.

Today, I’m sending out Milton Wes Art materials directly: a one-sheet, a pamphlet, and information about the work.

There’s a lot of conversation about algorithms, reach, followers and digital marketing. I still believe there’s something to be said for putting your work directly into someone’s hands.

An envelope. A name. A real introduction.

Some will respond. Some won’t. That part isn’t mine to control. My job is to make the work, put it in front of the right people, and keep moving.

This is part of the business of being an artist.

“Where did you get that?”

That’s the reaction I want the work to create.

One of one means you’re the only collector who owns the piece. But for me, there’s another part of it: the right art changes the way a room feels. It gives people something to stop for, look at, and talk about.

I’m biased. My home is proof.

America can't erase Black America without erasing itself. That's what Fractured Identity is about. The flag crosses a face that is coming apart. Our ancestors, Black men and women, died to help make America great. When their place in this country's history is erased, America loses the truth of who it is. What do you see when you look at this face?

Who gets to decide which methods count as making art?

I wrote about that question because the tool alone doesn’t tell you much about the person using it. The choices matter: what to keep, what to leave out, and when the work is finished. I’d rather look closely at those decisions than dismiss a piece because its method is unfamiliar.

Where do you draw that line?

A room can be finished and still feel like nobody lives there.

Love Your Face sits at the center of Unapologetic Faces: The Cost of Being Seen. It carries the places, losses, wins, mistakes, and memories that leave something behind on all of us.

This is a one-of-one framed work by Harlem artist Corey Wesley. Where would your eye land first if this were in the room?
