After the devastating 2020 fire, Bassett came back and is still here thriving! I recreated this Brooklyn original in miniature, and a few copies are available. Who remembers Pips Comedy Club on Emmons Avenue in Sheepshead Bay? Since 1962, Pips was a legendary proving ground where Andrew Dice Clay, Jerry Seinfeld, Adam Sandler, Rodney Dangerfield, George Carlin and many more performed, with Michael “Wheels” Parise as the longtime MC. Founded by George Schultz and later run with his sons Marty and Seth, Pips was also managed by comedian and former NYPD officer Ray Garvey, whose brother John later owned the club, and eventually Joey Gay, who respectfully had to close it. I recreated Pips in miniature, and even a few of the comics who were part of its history have the model on their shelves, including Andrew Dice Clay! A few copies are available now. Who still remembers The Original John’s Deli on Stillwell Avenue? From the famous roast beef with that thick gravy to hearing “THANK YOU, SUBWAY!” when someone leaves a tip, it’s pure old-school Brooklyn. The original location is still open and thriving, and the other John’s location is serving up great food too. I recreated the Stillwell Avenue John’s in miniature, and a few copies are available now. Who knows Wheeler’s Bar and Restaurant on Sheepshead Bay Road? Since 1979, it’s been a neighborhood favorite loved by generations. And who could forget that famous “NO SUSHI” sign in the window? Who remembers Lenny’s Pizza on 86th Street? Made famous by John Travolta and those two stacked slices in Saturday Night Fever, Lenny’s became a true Brooklyn original. For generations, it was one of those neighborhood places that just felt like part of Brooklyn. I recreated it in miniature to help keep those memories alive. A few miniature copies are available now. A&S Pork Store has been part of Avenue X and the Brooklyn community for generations, and it was an honor to recreate it in miniature. I even brought the model back to the store where it’s still serving customers today. A few duplicate copies are available now.
