Happy August 19th! š
On this exact day in 1638, six-and-a-half-year-old Jacobus sat for his portrait. We know because the artist carefully inscribed the date and his age in the upper corner: 19 August 1638, aged 6½ years.
Could it have marked a birthday? The beginning of his formal education? Perhaps this was the 17th-century equivalent of a first-day-of-school photo.
Dressed as a miniature gentleman, Jacobus looks remarkably composed though his slightly wilted lace cuffs may reveal the restless six-year-old underneath.
We know almost nothing else about him. Yet nearly four centuries later, this one August day survives.
Today we reach for our phones to preserve these moments. In 1638, Jacobusās family commissioned an artist.
