viBe Theater Experience (viBe) provides girls, young women, and nonbinary youth of color (aged 13-25) in New York City with free, high quality artistic, leadership and academic opportunities. viBe works to empower its participants to write and perform original theater, video and music about the real-life issues they face daily. viBe's performing arts and training programs provide the platform for

participants to amplify their voices and "speak truth to power", by creating an artistic response to the world around them

viBe began in 2002 with a group of eight girls wrote and performed a play about the issues important to them: misogynoir, domestic violence, homophobia, social and economic justice, police brutality, mourning and loss, violence, teenage pregnancy, and more. Almost 15 years later, viBe is now experienced at delivering a unique pedagogy that is grounded in devised theater, centered in racial and gender justice frameworks and dedicated to placing girls at the helm of the decision-making process. In the last fiscal year, viBe directly served 565 girls and young women; in addition viBe impacted 600 NYC public school students and 2,000 audience members through invited workshops and performances.

Happy National Black Girl Day Off!

Every day, young Black women/femme/q***r people work diligently within their chosen job/career path. However, we are not usually afforded enough time off for our bodies and minds to fully recuperate. That's why viBe Theater Experience recognizes and celebrates this day during Emotional Wellness Month (how fitting)!

Today, give yourself the time you need to completely slow down to a pause. Unwind and take in the relaxation that you deserve!

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day!

Today, we celebrate and honor the past, present, and future contributions of Indigenous people in the United States— especially women, girls, and gender-expansive people.

For two years now, the second Monday in October federally recognizes how Indigenous peoples have ā€œbuilt vibrant and diverse cultures— safeguarding land, language, spirit, knowledge, and tradition across generations.ā€

It has also provided a moment to reflect on the historical and present-day implications of U.S. involvement and treatment of Indigenous peoples. Identifying and implicating this settler relationship to lands, waters, Indigenous peoples, and treaties is a way to disrupt ongoing erasure, demonstrate accountability, and show respect and gratitude for the contributions of Indigenous communities.

We encourage our community to continue listening to, learning from and advocating for those who are most vulnerable and affected by discriminatory, unjust laws and regulations. To this end, we urge everyone to educate themselves and their loved ones about the unprecedented gender-based violence Indigenous girls, women, and gender-expansive people experience. Four out of five Indigenous women have experienced violence during their lifetimes. More than half report needing medical or legal services from experiencing violence, but more than one third are unable to get the help they need.

At viBe, we recognize there is more work to be done in safeguarding and protecting Indigenous girls, women, and gender-expansive people. Let's continue to hold space to those within Indigenous communities to speak on their lived experiences, passions and aspirations for the future.

Happy Emotional Wellness Month!

Much like our physical health, our emotional and mental health are EXTREMELY integral to our overall well-being. Without a better understanding of ourselves, we may not be able to interpret important factors within our daily life (for example, not realizing some of our stressors play a role in how we react to people/things/events, becoming burnt out more frequently/easily, etc). Therefore, viBe Theater Experience will be offering events, prompts, and other activities to uplift health and wellness during the month of October!

We encourage members of the BIPOC community to utilize this time of relaxation, and to take part in the activities/tasks/hobbies that bring you peace and joy!

September 17th is National Black Theatre Day: an annual day of solidarity and service, to celebrate and support 21st century Black theatres in their ongoing efforts to build sustainable, institutional wealth.

Today, we are celebrating our work as a Black theater company, as well as the work of our colleagues in the field: (bottom left), (top right), (top left), (bottom right) and (center) !

We are also celebrating our membership in the Coalition of Theaters of Color (CTC) which was first convened in 2004 by the late Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee to address funding inequity among theaters of color. Today, CTC seeks to sustain the legacy of our institutions while producing plays that tell our stories, our way, with pride and dignity. We currently receive funding from a City Council Initiative via the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.

INTRODUCING: Savannah Anderson (Summer '23 Intern)!

Hello! My name is Savannah. A little bit about me is that I am very passionate about Art, History, and Literature! I do consider myself an artist since I spend a lot of time drawing and painting while creating mixed-media pieces as well. Creating, in general, is very special to me and I express the love and need for creation in my personal works.

Practicing art from a young age opened a new world for me, I was able to discover and appreciate what was around me more. I realized how creation is everywhere and it has a large impact on communities, emotions, time, and life overall!

INTRODUCING: Samaiya Coates (Summer '23 Intern)!

My name is Samaiya Coates. I am a junior in Brooklyn High School of the Arts. I am a visual arts major at my school. I am excited that I was put into the viBe theater experience as an intern and I have enjoyed the time that I have had here in just this little time.

I love to be creative visually and I always try to look up and experience new art supplies. I have been creating ever since I was young maybe about 4 until now and hope that I can continue to create.

On June 27th, the Supreme Court made the decision to reject affirmative action programs nation-wide at colleges and universities. And we, at viBe, lament this decision as it has/is affecting the opportunities of BIPOC students and professionals in all fields.

Let's educate ourselves on this decision and what it means for BIPOC scholars/staff in the U.S.

Share resources and support ideas in the comments so that we can have an open, honest and productive conversation around this with the rest of our community!
