Do you know Xi Shi(西施)?
Xi Shi (西施) is celebrated as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. Her beauty was so legendary that it was said "fish would be so dazzled they would forget to swim and sink away from the surface" upon seeing her reflection.
Hailing from the state of Yue during the Spring and Autumn period, Xi Shi's story is intertwined with political intrigue and warfare. According to historical records and tales, during a war between the states of Yue and Wu, King Goujian of Yue devised a plan to defeat the powerful state of Wu. Xi Shi was chosen for her unparalleled beauty and sent to the court of King Fuchai of Wu as a tribute. Her presence and allure so entranced King Fuchai that he began to neglect state affairs, ultimately leading to the downfall of the state of Wu and its subsequent conquest by Yue.
Xi Shi's tale, beyond her beauty, touches on themes of loyalty, strategy, and sacrifice. Throughout Chinese history, her story has inspired countless poets, playwrights, and artists, making her a timeless figure in Chinese culture.
