Xi Shi (西施) is celebrated as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. Her beauty was so legendary that it was said "fish would be so dazzled they would forget to swim and sink away from the surface" upon seeing her reflection.

Hailing from the state of Yue during the Spring and Autumn period, Xi Shi's story is intertwined with political intrigue and warfare. According to historical records and tales, during a war between the states of Yue and Wu, King Goujian of Yue devised a plan to defeat the powerful state of Wu. Xi Shi was chosen for her unparalleled beauty and sent to the court of King Fuchai of Wu as a tribute. Her presence and allure so entranced King Fuchai that he began to neglect state affairs, ultimately leading to the downfall of the state of Wu and its subsequent conquest by Yue.

【Art Encyclopedia】Boneless Painting

Boneless (pronounced the same as "ink" in Chinese) is a technique in Chinese painting. The term "boneless" can be understood as "without". In traditional Chinese painting, the objects are usually outlined with ink lines, forming the basic framework, thus "bone" metaphorically refers to this outline. Hence, a "boneless" painting refers to a technique where the artist discards this ink outline and directly paints the objects with colors.

This technique was first seen in landscape painting. We can observe this kind of painting in the scripture transformation pictures in Dunhuang, suggesting that this technique may have been introduced from the Western Regions.

Yun Shouping, a painter from the Qing Dynasty, actively revived the boneless flower-and-bird painting technique, which influenced the entire genre of flower-and-bird painting in the Qing Dynasty and has been carried forward to modern times. His works provide a persuasive reference for the long-lost "boneless pictures" and the authentic boneless flower-and-bird painting technique.

Ming dynasty (1368-1644)

永樂十二年（1414）九月七日，榜葛剌（孟加拉）國王的使者獻了一隻「麒麟」給永樂皇帝。由於麒麟出現是國家昌隆的吉兆，因此不但大臣們紛紛以詩文讚頌，宮廷畫家也繪圖紀念。根據留下的圖像看來，當時所謂的「麒麟」，令人意想不到的是來自東非的長頸鹿。

The emissary of the king of Bengal (present-day Bangladesh) offered a qilin as a tribute to the Ming emperor Yongle on the 7th day of the 9th month in the 12th year of his reign (Sept. 20, 1414). The presence of a qilin was considered a celebratory sign of prosperous blessings, which prompted many court officials and artists to compose commemorative works, such as the illustration shown here. Surprisingly enough, the qilin is none other than a giraffe from East Africa.
