Invited dance Critic from India - Tapati Chowdhurie

Tapati Chowdhurie is a most sought after dance critic from India who holds a post graduation degree in English from the University of Calcutta. She has taken training in Kathakali, Kerala Natanam under Guru Gopinath and Mohiniyattam under his wife Guru Smt. Thankamani Gopinath. She has further embellished her training in Kathakali from International Centre for Kathakali, New Delhi under the guidance of Kalamandalam V. Radhakrishnan. Ms. Chowdhurie is one of those few dance critics who is endowed with complete knowledge on Bharatanatyam, Manipuri, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi and the latest addition Sattriya; the classical dance of Assam.
She has been serving as a dance critic since the last three decades writing in The Hindu, Sruti ( India’s premiere magazine on Indian Classical Dance and Music), and contributes to Attendance and Nartanam ( a quarterly magazine on Indian Classical dance) too. Tapati Chowdhurie has her own column at India’s most reputed news paper "The Statesman" where she has been writing regularly.

Curator's Note -

Rhythm and Motion is the brain child of Sri Pradeep Tandon based in New York and relentlessly been trying to promote the Indian Performing Arts through his widely reputed Kavi Sammelan which has been happening in New York since the last four years.

2020 will see the first edition of his dream project " Rhythm and Motion" coined by me with artists carefully curated under the direction of the artistic director to bring forth the best of the Indian Classical dance forms as practised by each of the artists.

For the first time the art lovers of New York will witness an amalgamated performance of all eight Indian classical dance styles by these acclaimed and world renowned artists in their individualistic styles.

Each dance style will be presented in a solo slot of 15 minutes and conclude together with all eight dance styles happening simultaneously on stage. The dancers dance in tandem with the music representing the individualistic element of their styles and merge beautifully portraying Unity in Diversity!

First Edition of Rhythm and Motion 2020 presents Mohiniyattam Exponent Smitha Rajan

Smitha Rajan one of India's best and internationally acclaimed Mohiniyattam performers, is well known for the spiritual intensity with personified grace, that she brings to the stage. She comes from a very rich classical tradition, which spans more than three generations. She is the grand daughter of one of India’s finest classical dance performers, (Late) Guru Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair (Kathakali) and the mother of Mohiniyattam, (Late) Guru Kalamandalam Kallyanikutty Amma. Recipient of numerous accolades which includes the Sangeetha Natak Academy Puraskar, Smitha has been performing for the past 4 decades with utmost adherence to the puritan classical tradition of Mohiniyattam which is well documented by her legendary grandmother. Natural learning opportunity Smitha received under her legendary grandparents, her mother, Guru Sreedevi Rajan and her aunt, Guru Kala Vijayan had laid in her the unique blend of lasya (grace) and abhinaya (facial expression). Smitha got the rare opportunity to extensively travel along with her grandmother, assisting her during her lecture demonstrations and master classes conducted for Mohiniyattam. Her abhinaya and gestures were fine-tuned by the great Kathakali maestro Krishnan Nair himself which has tuned in her the ability to transform and enact multiple characters in this Eka aharya (single costume) dance style as a solo performer.
Well versed in Kathakali, Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi as well, since her early teens, her primary focus has been Mohiniyattam and commitment to the rich heritage handed over to her by her legendary grandmother. Smitha’s artistic excellence as a teacher and performer is been illustrated across the western worlds for the past 20 years. With her wide teaching experience, which spans more than 3 decades she has numerous students around the globe, many of whom are well known dancers in respective fields. Her pursuit for excellence in Mohiniyattam had brought to her numerous critical acclaims from well-known critics in NY Times and other prestigious publications. Smitha spends her time both in USA and India, and attends major dance festivals in USA and India apart from her world tours. She is the artistic director of the institution, “Nrithyakshetra (Temple of Dance)”, based in St. Louis, Missouri.

She has been conducting dance and music festivals around the world under the banner of “Kalyana Krishna Foundation” for over 20 years. And she has successfully built a platform to support numerous artists throughout India for various events during a given year. Sanjib Bhattacharya, recipient of President’s Awards from Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam in 2006 and Smt.Pratibha Patil in 2011 is an accomplished Manipuri Dance Exponent, Guru and well-known Choreographer of India and abroad. He has received his training under the tutelage of Guru Bipin Singh, Padmashri Darshana Jhaveri, Kalavati Devi, Manjushree Chaki Sircar andMamata Shankar. He is currently an established performer of great repute having extensively performed across India and abroad. Shibani Patnaik

Shibani Patnaik is flourishing as one of the leading dancers in her generation today, born and raised in the United States. She has extensively trained under Padmashrees Late Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, Guru Aruna Mohanty as well as Guru Manoranjan Pradhan, and Guru Yudhistir Nayak from the Orissa Dance Academy. Her training has entailed frequent trips to study in Orissa. Shibani has performed extensively throughout America and India. Shibani and her sisters, known as the “Patnaik sisters” helped superstar Madonna choreograph a piece in Odissi style for the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards which was broadcasted to millions of viewers throughout the world. They also collaborated with Ricky Martin on an Odissi piece for his 2007 world tour. Stanford University presented Shibani with the 2001 Asian-American Performing Arts Award, and the Chapell-Lougee Scholarship to conduct research in Orissa. She has participated in prestigious dance festivals within India and frequently tours with the Orissa Dance Academy internationally. Shibani completed a solo North America, multi city tour in 2012 presenting her own work Samsara – the cycle of life. In 2002, while Shibani was a student at Stanford University, she organized and introduced a four year Indian classical dance program to the official curriculum where she taught Odissi classes for the first semester of the program

Bhavana Reddy, younger daughter and disciple of legendary dancing couple Padma Bhushans Drs. Raja Radha and Kaushalya Reddy, since the tender age of four, has been dedicated to the ancient art form of India Kuchipudi classical dance style. Prabal Gupta, a most sought after Performer, Choreographer and a Research Scholar is a prominent name in the world of Kathakali. Trained under Guru Sri FACT Padmanabhan, he has taken advanced training under the Central Sangeet Natak Academy Awardee and the legendary Kathakali Exponent and Research Scholar – Guru Sri Sadanam Balakrishnan.

Anita Sharma is an accomplished and versatile Sattriya artist who has conquered an enviable place in the world of Satriya, an exquisite dance form of Assam. She has devoted herself to learn Satriya dance under Padmashree Nrityacharya Jatin Goswami and has compelling and arresting stage presence with a rare combination of intensity and spontaneity. She is also trained in the art of Odissi by Late Guru Padmabibhusan Kelucharan Mahapatra at Bhubaneswar. Anita holds a master degree an Assamese literature from Guwahati University and has done extensive research work relating to the Sattriya dance form. She has been doing research work on “ Ojapali “ a rich cultural tradition of Assam under Sattriya Kendra( Sangeet Natak Akademi)
She has been awarded a two years of Junior Fellowship by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Dept. Of Culture, Govt. of India for the year 2005-2007 on “Different form of Folk elements of Assam in Sattriya Dance”.She is an ‘A’ graded artist of Doordarshan Kendra, New Delhi. She is an empanelled solo artist of the I.C.C.R is a recipient of the most prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi award from the Central sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.

She is also the founder of a rapidly growing Sattriya & Odissi dance Institute namely “Abhinaya Dance Academy” in the heart of Guwahati city with many upcoming talents.
The dance group of the academy represents a powerful combination of tradition and
versatility and has developed a natural flair for picking up right nuances of Sattriya in the
finest form. She has cut a niche for herself also in the field of choreography. She created Anubahv, which is an effort to bring some similarities of Sattriya with Odissi dance. She has made an effort to bring together Sattiya and Kathak dance to stage with an new out look . Kasi Aysola is an evocative artist who is pushing the boundaries of Indian classical dance in the United States. He is the Co-founder & Artistic Director of Prakriti Dance, an innovative dance company that is on the rise in the world of dance. Kasi is a Bharata Natyam dancer, choreographer, and nattuvanar who trained under his Guru Viji Prakash, and continues to mentor under world renowned performer Mythili Prakash. Aysola has been privileged to study and work with leading exponents of Indian dance and has performed solo and group work in the US, India and abroad. As a Nattuvanar (vocal percussion) Aysola has accompanied many artists in live performance such as Mythili Prakash, Ragamala Dance Company, Aparna Ramaswamy, Rama Vaidyanathan and Janaki Rangarajan. Aysola has received recognition and funding from various organizations including National YoungArts Foundation, Montgomery County Arts and Humanities Council, Alliance for California Traditional Arts, Maryland States Arts Council.
