Artists Amy Weitzman (.center ) and Helen Styring Tocci (The Love Baker) have created three panoramic Easter eggs to honor Ukraine.
We hope these “Easter shrines” will raise awareness & funds for Ukraine as the war continues into the Easter season.
Our original concept was to juxtapose traditional Easter decorations with symbols of war. As the project developed, shrines emerged that are dedicated to specific cities in Ukraine. Inspired by Pysanky Easter Eggs, the highly decorative exteriors contrast the minimalist white sculptures inside. Flowers meaningful in Ukrainian culture grace the interiors with hopes for human kindness, peace and new life.
Kyiv’s tank represents Russia’s thwarted advance towards the city. The peony inside is an offering for hope and human kindness.
The bullets in Bucha’s shrine remind us of the many civilians that were brutally shot during the Russian army’s occupation as they failed to reach Kyiv. A majestic sunflower bears a message of peace.
The Donetsk Theatre in Mariupol’s shrine is a memorial to the 300+ civilians that were killed when it was bombed on March 16. Periwinkle flowers bring a bittersweet prayer of remembrance & new life.
The entire project is crafted from sugar. Sugar eggs are a traditional, non-perishable Easter art that can be saved for years, sometimes generations.
This month we will auction the eggs to raise money for Voices of Children - a Ukraine-based aid organization that provides psychological support to children who have witnessed war.
If you, or someone you know, would be interested in bidding on these art pieces to support Ukraine please DM. Details on the auction to come shortly!
Please like, comment and share this project widely with folks who would enjoy. The more engagement we have, the more awareness & funds we can raise!
