Calpulli Mexican Dance Company is a professional touring company based in New York City. Its mission is to celebrate the rich diversity of Mexican and Mexican-American cultural heritage through dance including live music. To this end, Calpulli produces professional performances via its international touring company, designs arts-in-education experiences, and leads community-based classes and event
s across the northeastern USA. Calpulli was hailed a “terrific company” by Brian Siebert of the New York Times after its performance at Lincoln Center Out of Doors in August 2015. The company has also been praised by reviewers at the Houston Chronicle, NY Examiner, Time Out New York, Queens Courier, and others. The company was featured in stages across the USA including Queens Theatre, Symphony Space, Wortham Center, Cal Tech, and Carnegie Hall. It made its international debut in 2013 in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The word “calpulli” is from the native language of Nahuatl, and it is pronounced “call-pool-lee.” The word translates literally to “big house” and referred to the clans, families, and later syndicates that made up the Aztec civilization.
