The Perry Center for Native American Art at the Shelburne Museum will be devoted to the exhibition and care of the Museum’s collection of more than 500 Indigenous items from 389 Tribal Nations. In planning for the Perry Center, Shelburne Museum was intentional in collaborating with Tribal Nations and culture bearers whose works are represented in the collection. The result is a building and integrated landscape design that honors the traditional stewards of the site and is referential to the many cultures whose items will be housed in the Center.

This October, ArtTable will visit the Shelburne Museum as part of our weekend of programming Vermont. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear more about the Perry Center and the museum’s Native American Art Collection in a special behind-the-scenes discussion with Victoria Sunnergren, Associate Curator of Native American Art. We are saddened to hear of the passing of legendary artist Yayoi Kusama. Kusama’s signature polka dots, immersive Infinity Mirror Rooms, and monumental sculptures have left an indelible mark on the contemporary art world and pushed the boundaries of our imagination.

ArtTable has visited many of Kusama’s exhibitions over the years. Pictured here: 2021 program at the New York Botannical Garden, 2019 ArtTable Tour to Japan, 2019 visit to the Narcissus Garden, and 2022 ArtTable Tour to Scandinavia.

Join us at ICA Boston for a guided tour of "Leilah Babirye" with Ruth Erickson, Barbara Lee Chief Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs, on September 9.

For the ICA, Babirye premieres a new body of ceramic sculptures inspired by the idea of the q***r wedding. Each sculpture adopts a role—bride, groom, ring bearer, flower girl, bridesmaid, or groomsman—in a vivid installation that is both wedding ceremony and celebration. Witnessing this central event are a number of large-scale works in charred wood, representing the aunties, uncles, and ancestors who have populated the artist’s practice from the beginning.

Preserving roughly 75% of its original Gilded Age furnishings, paintings, and decorative arts, Shelburne Farms Inn was originally built for Lila Vanderbilt and William Seward Webb in 1888. The mansion sits on the shores of Lake Champlain and features period pieces, historic textiles, and carefully conserved structural details.

This October, ArtTable will visit the Inn for a tour as part of our weekend of programming in Vermont. View the full itinerary and register for this opportunity on our website or at the link in our bio.
