98 years, one stage, countless memories: The Carolina Theatre's remarkable story of survival and revival

Step into nearly a century of Charlotte history! The Carolina Theatre first opened its doors on March 7, 1927, with a silent film comedy "A Kiss in a Taxi" - and what a debut it was!

Did You Know?

• Built for $750,000
• Originally seated 1,450 people with stunning wrought iron chandeliers
• Charlotte's FIRST air-conditioned building!
• The King himself, Elvis Presley, rocked our stage in 1956
• "The Sound of Music" played here for a record-breaking 79 weeks!

The theatre weathered decades of change, including the important desegregation in 1963 that finally welcomed ALL patrons. After closing in 1978, passionate community advocates fought for 40+ years to preserve this architectural gem.

Thanks to dedicated preservationists and the Foundation For The Carolinas, the Carolina Theatre triumphantly reopened in March 2025 - restored to its original glory with modern touches!

Today, we're Charlotte's "community living room" - hosting everything from town halls to live music, films to comedy shows. Come make your own memories in this historic space!

Big thanks to Russ Russo for the gracious referral to Canvas Rebel, and to Christina Ramos for such a thoughtful interview!

Life has been nothing short of an adventure—filled with moments that continue to shape and enrich my spirit.

In this piece, I reflect on this wild and precious life, share a few lessons learned, and offer a glimpse into the next chapter that’s already unfolding.

Feeling grateful. Life is good.

In the early days of photography, capturing the true colors of blue skies was a challenge due to equipment limitations. As a result, skies in early photographs often appeared off-white or washed out.

This structure near my place, housing The Hartford Insurance Company, caught my eye in the morning fog. It was thick and decided to stick around way into the late morning. After capturing these photos, I warmed up the highlights in post-production to give it an old-time feel.

I felt it helped direct your eye towards this beautiful structure. I don't think a blue or even an interesting sky would benefit this building

How about you? Does the vacuous sky force you to spend extra time exploring this beautiful building?

The fog is a character unto itself. It glides through an environment like a ghost who wants to reveal itself. If you seek to embrace its presence, your action cannot waver. Before you blink, it will vanish and leave you basking in the sun.

These photos were taken just after sunrise next to my in-law’s home in Lenoir City. TN.

Welcome to Knoxville, TN! The arch, known as the "Knoxville Bike Arch", was installed in 2017 and has since become an iconic symbol of the of the city's commitment to promoting cycling as a means of recreation and transportation.

The idea was born out of a larger project, "One Riverwalk", which aimed to create a more bike friendly environment in downtown Knoxville. The project's goal was to provide a more accessible and enjoyable experience for cyclists and pedestrians along the Tennessee River, thereby enhancing the city's urban landscape and promoting a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.

The Knoxville Bike Arch was constructed through a combination of public and private funding. The unique design incorporates bicycle wheels, frames, and other cycle related elements. Once completed, the bike arch quickly became an admired landmark, attracting both local cyclists and tourists alike.

Home sweet home. After 13 days on the road, I've landed in my new home with my love, Danielle Lange , and my little love, Mr. Ernest Hemmingway, who happens to be in my lap as I write. I'm excited about this new chapter. Being on the road provided me with ample time to reflect and hone in on how I want to contribute creatively moving forward. I have a ton of inspiring images to edit and share soon. In addition, I will be launching a blog called Paul's Letter in the new year. Danielle and I are also flushing out a podcast idea titled The Artist Salon. Anyone interested in living a creative and meaningful life will find much value in these talks. In the meantime, stay well, and please enjoy this holiday with loved ones. 🙏
