My friend who is of the Māori people from New Zealand recently explained to how this fish got its name.
“It’s called the Māori Wrasse because of the designs on its head being similar to a Koru which is a native plant in New Zealand and had a large cultural significance in the Māori culture”
I’ve also heard that the facial designs on this wrasse resembles the facial tattoos of great Māori warriors called Tā moko
