Last Saturday, as Kalsang and I rolled up our store shutter to open, we noticed that our metal shutter gate was “vandalized” by a graffiti writing. This is something we had always dreaded having been in East Village for a while now. Everywhere we went, we noticed graffiti writings all over the store gates in this neighborhood. We have even talked with some shop owners in the past who were distraught that people had vandalized the glass window of their stores and they had to pay huge sums to have them cleaned or replaced. Needless to say, we were sad seeing this on our space as well. Some of the spray paint had passed further through the metal door on our glass window, which was the worst ‘cos we dont how it will go away now. Our first reaction was - “Let’s paint over it now right away”. We then checked our security camera to see a group of young people engaging themselves late night/early morning time. They looked like kids! We then decided to read and research on graffiti writing as a culture in this neighborhood and the history behind it. We are reading about graffiti as art or graffiti as vandalism and reading on both sides of the matter. We are personally not a fan graffiti writing on other’s property, especially commercial, but if this means some sort of expression of personal art or tagging (as we are learning the graffiti lingos) for whatever reasons, we dont want to disrespect. So for now, the graffiti stays! It hurts our hearts a little bit seeing this every morning as we open our shop because personally to us, it doesn’t go with the temperament of the pottery shop. But we fear that if we repaint this clean, it will only be a matter of time before someone tags it again.

Kalsang Pottery Diary: Today we took Ema out on her first ever pottery tour to visit our favorite pottery people. In the morning we visited master potter Todd Piker at Cornwall Bridge Pottery, CT and in the afternoon we visited Drew Montgomery at Montgomery Pottery in Webatuck Village, NY. Not sure what Ema will want to become in the future but we want to expose her to the raw world of pottery making early on. Ema had a fun time touching everything in the pottery shops. She did touch Drew’s pottery wheel and tried eating his pottery sponge.

Having a baby is teaching us to slow down. The past many years, Kalsang and I have been on the go. We were not just running - but sprinting. One goal after another, and instead of resting, we would see more reasons to run all the more. And all of a sudden, just like that, Ema is 7 months old! These 7 months felt like a slow lifetime - waiting - and watching - a tiny creature do one small new thing in what seemed like a timespan of eternity but which was just a span of a day or two. A small smile there, a flicker of the eyes, a new sound of a syllable, and now - that nonstop sense of wonderment and curiosity to reach out to everything only to put it in her mouth. Each day with our baby is a lifetime of learning. Thinking of a life before Ema, we remember a blob of a memory where we yearned for a dream, and died each day running after that passion. Now, everything seems less important. The pottery can wait, the shop can be closed a bit earlier, that hill can be climbed another day, that goal can be pushed further. We remind ourselves to take a pause and simply be in the moment. Unlike a piece of pottery we create, some creations take an eternity to be developed into its best personality, form and humanity.
