We all have it. That little voice of Doubt. Thing is, it can grow if you feed it and devour all the goodwill you feel towards your work. David Bayles, author of Art & Fear: Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, hit the nail on the head when he wrote, "Making art now means working in the face of uncertainty ; it means living with doubt and contradiction, doing something no one much cares whether you do, and for which there may be neither audience nor reward." Now, more than ever, the future is uncertain for artists. We need to keep the faith. Let go of Doubt. Trust your art.

Many years ago in a land far, far away - France, I bought a house in the countryside. The owner's last name was Desyeux (eyes). Their home was decorated with many kitsch items, covered, you guessed it, in eyes. The effect was weirdly uncanny. The of awakens the deepest, most primal recognition hardware in our brains. It plays upon the familiar and makes it foreign. Are these alien beings or simply benign versions of our familiar four-legged friends? You decide.

Are you a ? How do you interpret the medium?

Last chance to sign up for this weekend's workshop! I'm teaching three professional practice workshops for artists online at the New York Academy of Art and the first one is coming up this weekend! It's a great way for graduating artists to prepare for "real" life, for emerging artists to jump start their career and for experienced artists to strengthen their professional presence. The series is called "Branding for a New World" and the first workshop, "The Pitch" will deal with the dreaded artist statement. ;0)
Jump start those New Year's Resolutions and your art career at the same time!
