Celebrating Australian stories & artists in New York City. 💛 The Australian Theatre Festival NYC 2026 Spring Gala honored Carmel Dean, Hanne Larsen and Ainsley Melham.

Led by Co-Artistic & Executive Directors Mark Barford & Connor Delves, the Festival’s 5th Fundraising Gala was a sell-out success, with all proceeds going directly to the 2026 annual festival, this September in NYC.

One of the best things about the Australian community in New York? It's not all finance jobs and E-3 visas. There's a thriving creative scene — Australian actors, writers, directors, and producers doing incredible work on stages across the city.

The Australian Theatre Festival NYC just announced the winner of its 2026 New Play Award, and it's a big one. Danny Ball takes home $15,000 USD for La Malattia, a play about an Italian-Australian family in rural Australia dealing with violence, exile, and generational trauma. The runner-up is Grace Wilson's BOGQUEEN, set in drought-stricken Cunnamulla and centered on a woman determined to become the town's first drag king.

Both are distinctly, unapologetically Australian stories — and both are getting a platform in New York because of this award. Past winners have gone on to full productions at Sydney Theatre Company and won major Australian literary awards. It's the kind of opportunity that can change a career trajectory.

If you're in New York and want to support Australian creatives doing work outside the usual expat circles, this festival is worth knowing about.
