They escaped a euthanasia threat.

But the emergency followed them.

Belugas were relocated from the shuttered Marineland park as part of an international rescue. After three whales died at Shedd—including recent rescues and a longtime resident—the causes remain under investigation.

The remaining belugas are now being monitored around the clock. Some are showing encouraging signs. Others still have clinical concerns.

When staying and moving both carried serious risks, what should the rescue teams have chosen?

At 10,751 feet off California, the arms entered the ROV feed before the animal did.

A scientist thought it was a jellyfish—until the “elbows” appeared.

MBARI confirmed it as a bigfin squid and the first live observation of one in the Northeastern Pacific.

Scientists still don’t know exactly how these squid use their extraordinary arms.

Its identification plate had been removed.

No vessel reported it missing—and nothing nearby suggested a recent wreck.

I usually scroll past “mystery creature” videos.

But this one came directly from a scientific ROV—and the arms entered the camera before the animal did.

During a recent expedition off Central California, MBARI’s ROV Doc Ricketts was surveying the seafloor at 10,751 feet when several thin arms appeared in the top corner of the live feed.

Scientist Olívia Soares Pereira initially thought the shape might be a jellyfish.

Then she noticed the distinctive bends in the arms.

Seconds later, the rest of the animal emerged from the darkness.

MBARI and NOAA researchers identified it as a bigfin squid, Magnapinna. The encounter became the first confirmed live observation of this elusive squid in the Northeastern Pacific.

The team had not been searching for it. They were studying the seamount ecosystem when it silently crossed the ROV’s lights and hovered above the bottom.

The animal has been identified.

But the short recording cannot tell us whether it entered the lights by chance—or changed direction after noticing the ROV.

A research buoy off Northern California issued a 39-foot wave warning.

But the ocean around it was nearly flat.

Its camera captured the buoy being pulled far below its normal waterline while the mooring remained intact.

Then it returned upright.

The pressure sensor never transmitted again.

Thousands of fish suddenly split around a 35-foot space that appeared completely empty.

The gap moved against the current.

No body appeared in the lights—and sonar detected no solid return.

But every fish reacted to the same invisible boundary.
