A Powerful New Musical Builds Momentum Toward Its Next Big Milestone
Weightless: Becoming Lighter Than Your Baggage
is a musical memoir about the emotional baggage we carry, the inner critics we wrestle with, and the stories we tell ourselves. Created by Laura Clancy (book, music, lyrics, co-producer, performer), the show traces her journey from being “the fat cheerleader” in high school to becoming a world-record-holding powerlifter, with her inner voices brought to life as full theatrical characters.
The project began unexpectedly after Laura lost everything in a devastating fire. Through a chance meeting with Drew Lawrence (music, lyrics), they began creating songs, and Laura entered the Next Step Theatre Festival without fully knowing how she would perform. Trynne Paris (book, co-producer) joined to shape the story, turning Laura’s inner alter egos into compelling characters and connecting the dots from self-doubt to self-acceptance.
With support from Eileen Nelson (producer, director) and consulting producer Tony Smith, the solo show grew into a full ensemble industry reading. The team credits the TheaterMakers Mentorship Mastermind with helping them navigate both creative and business challenges, providing strategic guidance, professional insight, and a supportive community. Mentors including Monica Hammond, Eric Webb, and Jonathan Hogue helped the team think strategically about development, sustainability, and producing.
Next Steps:
The show is preparing for a January 12 industry reading and will continue touring the solo version while expanding the ensemble version. The long-term goal is a full-scale musical that is bold, theatrical, and Tony-worthy. Beyond performance, the team is launching the Weightless Experience, a 16-week course and immersive retreat where participants create their own mini-musicals inspired by personal stories.
