✨✨Meet Spring 2026 Writers Intensive playwright…. Andrew Aaron Valdez✨✨
Andrew Aaron Valdez is a Coahuiltecan-Chicano artist guided by Xinatchli, the Coahuiltecan-Nahuatl concept of a seed breaking open in order to grow. His work explores memory, transformation, healing, and community through collaborative, culturally responsive practice. He is the Artistic Workshops Manager at New York Theatre Workshop, teaches with the Indigenous Cultures Institute, serves on the Steering Committee of the Latinx Theatre Commons, a certified Intimacy Director with IDC, holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, and appeared in the Drama League Award-nominated production American Dreams.
As a playwright, his work has been a finalist for Fault Line Theatre’s Irons in the Fire, Reimagining New Plays in TYA, Pipeline Theatre Company’s PlayLab, and the Austin Latinx New Play Festival. He has also been a member of PlayPenn’s Playwrights Cohort, Orchard Project’s Green Lab, the Playwrights’ Center’s Mixed Writers Room, and was an inaugural Candela Playwriting Fellow.
His research and artistic practice have been supported through fellowships and residencies at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Yale University’s Beinecke Library, Cleveland Public Theatre, the Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center, Twelve Literary Arts, Americans for the Arts and the Connecticut Office of the Arts. He is a cofounder of DIEZ, a NALAC Fund for the Arts grantee organization.
