✨✨Meet Spring 2026 Writers Intensive playwright…. Andrew Aaron Valdez✨✨

Andrew Aaron Valdez is a Coahuiltecan-Chicano artist guided by Xinatchli, the Coahuiltecan-Nahuatl concept of a seed breaking open in order to grow. His work explores memory, transformation, healing, and community through collaborative, culturally responsive practice. He is the Artistic Workshops Manager at New York Theatre Workshop, teaches with the Indigenous Cultures Institute, serves on the Steering Committee of the Latinx Theatre Commons, a certified Intimacy Director with IDC, holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama, and appeared in the Drama League Award-nominated production American Dreams.

As a playwright, his work has been a finalist for Fault Line Theatre’s Irons in the Fire, Reimagining New Plays in TYA, Pipeline Theatre Company’s PlayLab, and the Austin Latinx New Play Festival. He has also been a member of PlayPenn’s Playwrights Cohort, Orchard Project’s Green Lab, the Playwrights’ Center’s Mixed Writers Room, and was an inaugural Candela Playwriting Fellow. 

His research and artistic practice have been supported through fellowships and residencies at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Yale University’s Beinecke Library, Cleveland Public Theatre, the Julia de Burgos Cultural Arts Center, Twelve Literary Arts, Americans for the Arts and the Connecticut Office of the Arts. He is a cofounder of DIEZ, a NALAC Fund for the Arts grantee organization.

✨✨Meet Spring 2026 Writers Intensive playwright….Emma Y. Lai✨✨

Emma Y. Lai is a Taiwanese playwright and new works director. Emma’s plays have been developed with The Tank NYC, Melancholics Anonymous, Jersey City Theatre Center, Picnic Basket Theatre, and Frank Silvera’s Writers Workshop. She was a Finalist for Pipeline Theatre Co. ‘s 2024 PlayLab and the BIPOC Festival at Boise Contemporary Theatre, and a Semi-Finalist for The Many Voices Fellowship at Playwrights’ Center and the Signpost Fellowship. She was a member of Theatre Mu’s Emerging Playwrights Cohort and PlayPenn’s Playwrights Cohort. Her favorite directing/assisting credits include: The Garden: A New Folk Musical by Hannah Bakke (Childrens’ Theatre Company TAT), Your Own Personal Exegesis by Julia May Jonas (dir. Annie Tippe; LCT3), and was a directing observer at NAMT. She is currently writing the book for the horror musical, Locust, commissioned by Trademark Theatre. ✨✨Meet Spring 2026 Writers Intensive playwright…. Rebecca Benoit✨✨

Rebecca Benoit is an LA-based playwright whose current work explores the media-saturated comfort economy. Alongside her writing, she works as a script consultant for youth-focused film and television, supporting authentic, inclusive storytelling, and as a consultant on book-to-screen adaptation. 
She holds a BA in Literary Arts from Brown University and a Master’s in Visual and Media Anthropology. She previously worked for Wes Anderson’s production company, American Empirical Pictures. Her film credits also include Alice Winocour’s Couture and Questlove’s Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).

Silma Sierra Berrada is an African American and Moroccan playwright, poet, and visual artist whose work excavates the space where the personal ruptures against the political. She writes toward ancestral haunting, spiritual collapse, and the inheritance of pain—asking what
tenderness survives inside systems built for endurance. Her plays have been developed at McCarter Theatre’s Paula Vogel Bake-Off and recognized with the Crossroads Genesis Prize for Playwriting Excellence. She holds an A.B. in English from Princeton University and is currently an M.F.A. candidate in Playwriting at Columbia University.

DJ Hills (they/them) is a cross-genre writer for the page, stage, and screen. DJ’s plays include Horsegirl & Cowdaddy (the Wilma/Soho Rep), come straight home (Great Plains Theatre Commons), TRUNK BRIEF JOCK THONG (The Q***r Ensemble), Adult Things (Carnegie Mellon University), and I SWEAR TO GOD (University of California Los Angeles). DJ’s plays have additionally been developed with The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference, Boston Court Pasadena, and Seven Devils Playwrights Conference. Their short plays ...in daylight and big and small were part of Theater Masters TAKE TEN 2022 and 2023, respectively, and subsequently published by Concord Theatricals. TRUNK BRIEF JOCK THONG was shortlisted for the 2023 Yale Drama Series. Their poetry chapbook Leaving Earth was published by Split Rock Press. Fellowships and residencies include the Substratum writing residency and Tofte Lake Center’s National Emerging Artist Residency.
