Julian Blackmon Returns Healthy and Hungry for a Fresh Start with the Saints ⚜️

Julian Blackmon is entering the 2026 season with a renewed appreciation for football after his first year with the New Orleans Saints ended almost as soon as it began. The veteran safety suffered a posterior labrum tear in his right shoulder during the 2025 season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, but he still played every defensive snap and finished with seven tackles and one pass breakup. The injury required surgery and forced him to miss the final 16 games, teaching Blackmon how quickly an NFL opportunity can disappear. Now healthy again, he is approaching every practice with humility, gratitude, and a determination to make the most of his second chance in New Orleans.

Although Blackmon’s debut season lasted only one game, the Saints saw enough during training camp and the opener to continue believing in his ability. New Orleans rewarded that promise by signing him to a one-year contract extension in January, giving him another opportunity to become the defensive playmaker the team originally envisioned. Before arriving in New Orleans, Blackmon started 62 games across five seasons with the Indianapolis Colts and established himself as a productive, versatile safety. He enters 2026 with 10 career interceptions, 22 pass breakups, and more than 300 tackles, bringing valuable experience and ball-hawking ability to Brandon Staley’s defense.

Blackmon believes his growing chemistry with Justin Reid could help them develop into one of the NFL’s strongest safety combinations. Both players are entering their second season in Staley’s system, giving them a better understanding of the coverages, responsibilities, and communication required on the back end. Blackmon knows staying healthy will be essential, but he is excited to return to the field and contribute to the Saints’ team-first mentality of “Together we eat.” After losing nearly an entire season, he is no longer taking a single practice or game for granted—and if he remains available, Blackmon could become one of the most important comeback stories on the Saints’ defense in 2026.

Barion Brown Could Force Kellen Moore to Rethink the Saints’ Roster Plans!

Ja’Lynn Polk’s unexpected retirement created another opening in the New Orleans Saints’ wide receiver competition, but it does not necessarily mean the team must keep six receivers. Rookie Barion Brown could give head coach Kellen Moore the flexibility to carry only five because of his ability to contribute on offense and special teams. If Brown secures the primary return job while proving he can handle a limited offensive role, New Orleans could use that extra roster spot to retain another edge rusher, defensive back, or player at a position where depth is more urgently needed.

Brown’s greatest strength is his game-changing return ability. The sixth-round pick finished his college career with an SEC-record six kickoff-return touchdowns—just one short of the NCAA record—while averaging 29.4 yards across 65 returns. However, the former Kentucky and LSU playmaker is showing that he should not be viewed only as a return specialist. During Monday’s training-camp practice, Brown reportedly beat veteran cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. downfield and connected with Spencer Rattler for one of the session’s biggest offensive plays. That reception provided another glimpse of the speed and explosiveness Brown could bring to Moore’s offense.

Brown has the tools to develop into the Saints’ next dangerous big-play weapon following Rashid Shaheed’s departure. His speed allows him to threaten defenses vertically, but he can also create yards after the catch when given the ball in space. Brown may not receive a large number of offensive snaps as a rookie, especially in a receiver room led by Chris Olave, Jordyn Tyson, and Devaughn Vele, but he would not need many opportunities to make an impact. If he continues producing throughout camp and the preseason, Brown could earn a weekly offensive role, lock down the return job, and ultimately convince Moore that the Saints can enter the 2026 season with only five receivers.
