There are a couple of board games on the desk, a book on folklore behind me, and somewhere in the stack—assuming it hasn’t been swallowed by the stack—a collection of Route 66 ghost stories.

All of that, and quite a bit more, will find its way into Gauge Illuminations.

This is our first introduction to a podcast about urban legends, roadside folklore, haunted highways, cryptids, regional ghost stories, strange history, and the stories people tell when the road grows dark and the dashboard becomes the brightest thing in the world.

But I’m not terribly interested in merely repeating spooky stories. I want to know where they came from, how they traveled, what changed along the way, and what makes a perfectly reasonable person lean forward and say, “Now, I don’t know whether this is true, but…”

We’ll look at the machinery beneath the stories: the details that create dread, the rhythms that keep listeners trapped, and the storytellers who know precisely when to pause.

There will be folklore. There will be movies, books, games, podcasts, roadside attractions, urban legends, Route 66 ghost stories, and things glimpsed briefly at the edge of the headlights.

Some of them may even be true.
