John Fogerty was once sued for sounding too much like... John Fogerty.

Fantasy Records claimed “The Old Man Down the Road” copied “Run Through the Jungle,” a song John had written years earlier during his CCR years. So John brought his guitar into court, played both songs for the jury, and proved they were two separate compositions.

He won the case, taking the fight all the way to the Supreme Court, helping to set an important precedent for artists defending their work. The John Fogerty defense allows artists to never be sued for plagiarizing themselves.

What a night.

Last night John had the incredible honor of receiving the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. To be recognized in this way, for his songs, means more to him than he can really put into words.

Songwriting has been at the center of his life since he was a kid. From the first songs he tried to write, to the little notebook where he kept ideas that would one day become part of his story, he has always believed in the power of a song to carry you through. Through the good times, the dark times, and everything in between.

To receive this honor after the long journey of finally reclaiming his music is something he will never take for granted. John is deeply grateful to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, to Steve Miller for his kind words, to his family, band, sons Shane and Tyler, and to everyone who has ever listened, sung along, or found a piece of their own life in one of his songs.

Guess there’s only one thing left to say...

We’re going to Disneyland.

Before “Proud Mary” became a song known around the world, it started with a title John had been carrying with him.

In this clip from NPR’s Tiny Desk, John looks back on the moment he wrote “Proud Mary,” a song that would go on to become one of the most beloved and enduring songs in American music.

Tomorrow, John will receive the Johnny Mercer Award at this year’s Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction & Awards Gala, the highest honor given by the Songwriters Hall of Fame. An incredible achievement, and a beautiful moment to celebrate the songs that have meant so much to so many.
