Whether you contributed to this historic milestone as a We Fund Us monthly giver, our Legacy Brick campaign, 2020 GoFundMe, participating in fundraising or building events, or just sharing information about The Schoolhouse with your network: THANK YOU.

The Black School uses art to transform social realities through Black Love, Healing, and Self-Determination. Our vision is a liberated future where art and design flourish as tools for expanding social good.

After six years including a crowdfunding and capital campaign, community design research, workshops, surveying initiatives, multiple events, volunteer efforts, and almost 2 years of construction, our vision for intergenerational, collective power is almost complete.

The Schoolhouse is a building shaped by the priorities of the people it is meant to serve: Youth who need creative pathways into economic mobility and methodologies for shaping the world around them; families who want safe, intergenerational gathering spaces; elders who want continuity for cultural traditions and stories; and communities that need stable, local infrastructure created with their input and in their image.

Join us in celebrating ten years of making good on a collective promise, as we open the doors to a new era of Black institution and nation-building.

WHEN: October 10, 2026, 12PM-4PM
WHERE: TBSchoolhouse @ 1660 N. Roman St., New Orleans, LA

Generating our own power is not only a form of resilience, it is independence.✊🏾This month with a small group of TBS regulars we’re installing permanent solar panels on The Schoolhouse’ off grid garden shed.

We want to share the knowledge we gain with you! ⚡In partnership with Footprint Project, join us for a hands-on workshop and learn more about the basics of a solar microgrid, how to calculate electrical loads powered by the microgrid, and safety + troubleshooting tips. Lunch will be provided.

💡Imagine you’re exploring our community garden: the “green heart” of The Schoolhouse. You and our neighbors are enjoying a living sanctuary of healing, food sovereignty, and intergenerational care that anchors an unapologetic oasis of Black life. Solar panels are helping to power our building and the garden.
