I have received many questions on how to get that beautiful Green yard. This time of year the soil is awaiting those nutrients it has missed all winter. most customers ask what can I buy to put down on the lawn and how much do I need to cover the entire lawn? If you live in Sugarmill Plantation most homes will use 1-2 35lb-40lb bags of fertilizer to cover the entire yard. Most yards are centipede and need a clover, and dollar w**d treatment with the soil enhancers. On the reverse side of the bag it contains a chart that will tell you what setting to use to get the best results on a spreader. Make sure the fertilizer has the herbicide premixed or buy a herbicide safe for lawns. Once you have completed the fertilizing the yard needs the most important thing which is water. How much water does the yard need? The yard needs 15-20min of water in the morning and evening during mild heat. In extreme heat the yard will need 30min of water in the morning and evening. I recommend sprinklers that you can zone off or control the spread of water. Also get a timer to regulate the amount of time needed to take care of that task.

Time to check those calendars and take a look into the 2023 grass season. As February grinds closer to the end and March appears many have questions on how to get the lawn ready. Walk the yard and see if there is a build up of dead grass on the top of the lawn. If you notice this you will have to take the yard or mow on a lower setting to mulch up this grass to allow nutrients to reach the soil. Most yards have been aerated and allowed the grass to dive deep to survive this cold winter and in March we want to aerate the yard and put out those fertilizers to help stimulate it. What fertilizers should I use? Scott’s and lawn expert both make great products sold at Walmart nearby. You want to find a fertilizer that kills the w**ds and feeds the soil. Then you want to get a bag of grass seed that matches your yard or pick a grass culture you want to mix with the existing grass. Or you can buy Scott’s lawn max which has all three. I also recommend Scott’s triple action to kill those insects and improve the soil. Once the yard is prepped make sure you give the yard water for at least 30min a day for 2 weeks. You have to keep the yard wet to allow grass seeds to grow and to get the fertilizer into the soil. This will enhance the yard to give you that incredible green we all seek. You can also add ironite to the yard to turn the yard a beautiful green. Those pesky bare spots in the yard can be fixed with overseeding and adding a layer of topsoil on top. Make sure to water these spots to keep them wet.
