‘The 3 Living Meet the 3 Dead’ was a common Gothic subject about confronting mortality. My painting updates this theme in Neo-Regionalist style. A happy rural family meets 3 zombie parasites: the military industrial warmonger, the Bible thumping nationalist, and the land grabbing real estate lawyer and developer. Confronted by these immoral and unethical savages, I fear for the average American. My painting is oil on canvas, 36” x 18”. This has appeared on my website, but only in an unfinished and unframed state. I finally got a good image of it this morning.

This is a notebook drawing taken from a 5th or 6th century Persian silver vase. It depicts a temple priestess; daughters of high ranking people served in the temples of Anahita before marriage. It apparently raises a question of the practice of temple prostitution (!?). Her pose is reminiscent of Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’.

This is ‘Justice Sleeps’, acrylic on paper, 6 3/4 x 8 3/4. The compositional model is the stage set of Tiepolo, contrasting the privileged life, upholding a system of injustice and inequity, with the greater world of teeming masses struggling for survival.

This little book, ‘Indians and the Old West’, adapted from the pages of American Heritage, was first published by the Golden Library of Knowledge in 1954, when the MAGA crowd thought America was great again. It tells a sympathetic and unvarnished story of the ‘First Americans’. My wife Rebecca owned it in grade school. I’m sure it would be banned in many school systems today.

I was amazed to see this large black beetle with dramatic ‘eyes’ on his back, crawling across our front lawn this evening. I was so excited I didn’t think to snap his photo, but went running to show Rebecca. When we got back he was gone. He was large, at least 2 inches big, and it’s ‘eyes’ amazing, like Hokusai! This is my quick pen sketch of the creature. The ‘Big Eyed Click Beetle’ is a beneficial insect, eating the larvae of wood boring insects. When overturned, he is able to flip into the air to right himself- with a click!

I found this pen drawing in a desk drawer. It’s an ancient Chinese horse, based on photographs from the then recently discovered tomb of the first Emperor of China.

The Greek philosopher Diogenes is famous for endlessly searching for a good and honest man or woman. He was quoted as saying ‘We are human beings only in name, and beasts in our deeds’. I think he would still be frustrated in his search today. This is ‘Diogenes’, oil on canvas, 22”x18”.

This is an earlier drawing, when I first started using a novelty colored pen I was given at work. I like to draw with pen, and I realized that I could use it’s 3 colors, red, blue, and black in much the same way that French draftsmen like Watteau used a 3 crayon technique to create form. The life-masks of Thutmose give a sense of a living person, rather than the official likeness of statues. This is the fascinating ‘heretic’ pharaoh Akhenaten.
