Tuesday Motivation: last weekend at the movie theater, I held the door for a family of five, who simply walked out one by one without so much as making eye contact with me, let alone thanking me. Have you ever held the door for someone who simply walked through without thanking you? Did you feel like pulling them right back out to teach them some manners? Our acts of gratitude should not be based on how people respond. Today is Giving Tuesday. Be generous and kind to someone, regardless of how they respond. Your actions reflect your character, not that of those who surround you. Have a wonderful Tuesday!

Tuesday Motivation: we’re getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving. Name three areas in your life for which you are grateful. I‘m grateful for my family, my good health, and my job! Life is beautiful! It’s often tough, but it’s always beautiful. Have a spectacular Tuesday and a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! Remember to share why you are grateful. Let’s “break” the internet with positivity. 😁

Tuesday Motivation: Sometimes you hear people say that they became successful on their own. While they may have worked very hard to achieve success, it is simply not possible to “make it” on your own. Family, friends, and colleagues support you along the way, even if you don’t realize it. My first job out of college was interesting, but after about 18 months, I wanted to try something different. One day, I came home to a voicemail from a manager at an insurance company. She had received my resume and wanted to discuss an opportunity. Unbeknownst to me, my friend had given my resume to her friend, who worked at the company. Two weeks later I had a new job. Sometimes people help you and you don’t even realize it. No matter how good you are at what you do, a strong network is essential to your development. Think of the people who have supported you in your journey. Send one of them a note of appreciation; remember to tell them how they helped you and how much you appreciate it. Have a wonderful, magical Tuesday! BTW, the first person to respond with the names of all five people in the picture will receive a prize.

Do you ever look at your life and wonder how to manage your priorities? I often look at my schedule and think it’s totally insane. Then I wonder how the CEOs, executives, and world leaders manage their busy lives. A few weeks ago, I attended a three day workshop on telling the story of our business unit. During one of the exercises we learned how to juggle. Even experienced jugglers drop a ball once in a while. Imagine if the balls were your priorities. Now imagine if some of the balls were made of glass. You would certainly do your best to avoid dropping the glass balls. The glass balls are the most important priorities in our lives. You can’t do it all. You can try, but you’ll get burned out. Focus on your life’s key priorities, and everything else will fall into place. Keep the glass balls in the air and don’t worry if you drop the other balls once in a while. Have an amazing Tuesday!

Tuesday Motivation: avoid complaining and making excuses. You solve nothing with such bad habits. The most productive people acknowledge there’s a problem and move swiftly to solutions. I remember working on a project in 2007. When the project sponsor asked me about a missed deliverable, I was tempted to provide a litany of reasons for the miss, including the names of those responsible, but then I remembered that I was the project manager. If I was willing to accept praise for the wins, I needed to accept criticism for the losses. I said, “I know exactly what happened, and I’ll ensure it’s resolved.” The project sponsor smiled, thanked me, and we moved on to the next topic. Do you ever find yourself complaining or making excuses? When the temptation arises, try using the following phrases:

“Next time I will…”
“Let’s consider…”
“I will learn to…”
“Thank you for the feedback.”

Try it for three weeks and let me know how it goes. Have an amazing day!

Tuesday Motivation: last month I was telling Kwame about a conversation with someone, who, in my view, was not making sense. Seeing that I was still frustrated, Kwame said, “Dad, why waste your time trying to understand someone’s logic, especially if you don’t know the person that well? After making your point a couple of times, just move on. It’s not worth the energy.” That’s great advice from a 15-year old. Kwame’s brother is 12 and these guys have taught me numerous lessons over the years. I now know what one of my former colleagues meant when she said, “My kids raised me.” Every experience and interaction has the potential to teach us a valuable lesson. Take a moment to recognize these lessons and let them enrich your life. Have a magnificent Tuesday!

Tuesday Motivation: on Friday, I celebrated my 3-year Pfizer anniversary. In 2018, I was very excited about working in NYC – the city is vibrant, exciting, and inspiring. However, my September and March visits to the office left me disappointed. The Metro North train was almost empty, Grand Central was quiet, The Grand Hyatt was closed, and only a few people walked the streets. Midtown was like a sleeping giant. Going to the office last Wednesday and seeing more people walking the streets, eating at restaurants and slowly returning to work, reignited my spirit; it reminded me why it feels good to be a Pfizer employee. Last year, our CEO Albert Bourla said we would bring a COVID vaccine to market quickly. A task that seemed insurmountable is now a reality, and is giving hope to millions of people for a return to some form of normalcy. I am proud to work for Pfizer and I look forward to seeing the city vibrant once again in 2021. Have an outstanding Tuesday!

Tuesday Motivation: my first-semester freshman year calculus professor was surprised at my mediocre quiz results. I sat in the front and participated frequently. He said to me, “I’m not sure why your quiz results don’t match your enthusiasm in class, Nana.” Something was missing. Fortunately, I figured it out, and eventually majored in math. What was the issue? My study habits were not the greatest. Liking a subject does not ensure successful test performance. Whenever I think of the experience, my dad’s words come to mind: “No one ever wins a Nobel Prize for potential.” Have you ever had a wonderful idea for an invention or a business, done nothing about it, only to read about someone else successfully launching the very idea two years later? If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that life is short and extremely precious. Do something great with your ideas. Sitting on them won’t get you anywhere. There is no success without action. Have a wonderful, action-packed, magical Tuesday!

Tuesday Motivation: people often ask the Southwest Airlines leadership team how they get their people to be so nice. The answer is – they hire nice people. Determination and tenacity are essential for success in any endeavor, but there is no substitute for a pleasant attitude. This is a key insight from Mac Anderson’s book, “You Can’t Send a Duck to Eagle School.” I highly recommend the book; I also recommend that you approach every day with optimism and a pleasant attitude. Have an amazing, magical Tuesday!

Tuesday Motovation: just received my second vaccine shot. As a reminder, if you want to come to my house this summer for burgers, you will need to bring your vaccination proof. My son Kwame and nephew Kobe will be checking for valid cards at the entry point. As I shared last week, there is light at the end of the tunnel. People are getting vaccinated daily, the weather is improving, and kids are slowly going back to school. Let’s stay vigilant and optimistic. Have an amazing Tuesday!

Tuesday Motivation: yesterday, my 6th grader, Kwasi, went to school for the first time since March 2020. He’ll be going on Mondays and Tuesdays and will be remote the rest of the week. My 10th grader, Kwame, will return on April 5th, also with some form of hybrid schedule. According to the CDC, the US is currently administering 2.2 million vaccine shots a day. There is light at the end of the tunnel. I will serve burgers at my house this summer – vaccination card required if you want to come. As the weather starts improving in CT, kids start going back to school, COVID numbers decline, and the number of people receiving the vaccine increases, I am extremely optimistic that 2021 will be the better year we all prayed for. Stay positive and have an amazing, magical, Tuesday!

Tuesday Motivation: my boys claim that they hate math. My wife’s Aunt Sadie says you need a special mind to love math. Well, I was a math major in college and I can promise you that I don’t have a special mind. On Sunday I was showing Kwame how to factor quadratic expressions. He worked on them in his usual reluctant way. After struggling to solve about three problems, he started to work them out with ease. That’s what math and life are all about. Yes, there are many talented people in the world, but many of them work extremely hard. There are also people who lack talent - many of them also work extremely hard. Both groups of people often experience tremendous success. Put your blood, sweat, and tears into everything that’s important to you, and you will be successful. Talent and a special mind are merely bonuses - they are not needed. Have an outstanding Tuesday!
