New Haven was incorporated as a city in 1784, and Roger Sherman, one of the signers of the Constitution and author of the "Connecticut Compromise", became the new city's first mayor. April 24th, 2013, marked the 375th anniversary of New Haven’s founding. John Davenport and five hundred of his fellow Puritans set sail from Massachusetts to the Quinnipiac River in April 1638. The settlers traded and negotiated a series of treaties with the Quinnipiac tribe, including offering protection from the Mohawks, who had been making raids against the Quinnipiac and other tribes in the area. These treaties continued through the next decade, allowing New Haven to grow peacefully . New Haven blossomed with the industrial revolution (check our blog on Mondays to learn about New Haven inventions, New Haven Firsts, and other fun facts), and continues to thrive as a vibrant center for urban life. 375+ years later, the Elm City is known as the Cultural Capital of Connecticut, a foodie destination, home to world class education, and a fantastic place to live, work, learn, and play.

Sad to pass on this news about a New Haven legend

Anybody who spent much time in downtown New Haven knew about “The Shakespeare Lady,” and her mesmerizing sidewalk performances she did for “therapy” and spare change.

Say hello to our friend Junior. A legend of the district for 30+yrs. You may have heard him sing his song and seen his dance. The dancing may have slowed a bit but he’s still got the song. How ya doin’ JR. Don’t leave me hang’n.

Happy Independence Day! In New Haven, it’s a day to honor Roger Sherman, the former mayor, senator, and Yale treasurer who signed all four of the nation’s founding documents, including the Declaration of Independence. Sherman is buried at the Grove Street Cemetery.

Commencements took place yesterday on the campus of Yale University. I Love New Haven's Chris Randall took some wonderful pictures of the main campus ceremony and the Yale Law School commencement and champagne toast back at YLS. All of which can be seen here in their album.

Just simply amazing.

Just simply amazing.

On January 19th, I met a young man on the street named Vidal, and I asked him to tell me about the person who had influenced him the most in his life. He told me about his principal, Ms. Lopez, and he explained how she had taught him that he mattered. Over the next two weeks, I learned the story of Ms. Lopez and her school, Mott Hall Bridges Academy. By hearing the stories of MHBA students and educators, my eyes were opened to the unique challenges facing a school in an under-served community. Ms. Lopez taught me that before a student is ready for academic training, they must be made to understand that they deserve success. And that can be the hardest battle in education. Ms. Lopez always said that there was no place her students did not belong. Recently we received an invitation that proved just that.

Nicely done HONY & Brandon Stanton!
