New Haven lost a great one. I love this man, he had such a big heart.
I first met Celestino Cordova when I was running for Mayor last year and I was seeking the Democratic town committee endorsement (Celestino was the 15th ward co-chair). Our first conversation lasted 3 hours!
This man was full of ideas on how to improve New Haven. I recorded a video of his thoughts on vocational education, expanding tourism through the ports and the Quinnipiac River, and other economic development ideas.
He asked me to promise him two things if I became Mayor - to help bring back a Puerto Rican cultural parade, and to establish a monument to honor the Puerto Rican veterans of the Korean War, which Celestino received the Congressional Gold Medal for. I still think this is something the city should do - Mayor Justin Elicker, Rosa DeLauro, Senate President Martin Looney, Gary Winfield, State Representative Juan Candelaria, State Representative Al Paolillo.
I approached Celestino for his vote, but I gained a friend in the process. I would check in with him several times after the election, and he was always supportive of what I was trying to do and I always felt energized after talking with him. My deepest condolences to the Cordova family, and the many, many people who came to know and love Celestino.
