🎨Green Gallery Artist Feature: *The Story Behind the Art* 🎨

Today's feature is a look at Becky Dickovitch one of the artists showing in our Green Gallery this month!

Pictured above are two pieces from this month's gallery show "The Encore",
"Personal Space" pictured first is made from thread and fabric scraps.

"Drizzle" the second is made from thread and fabric scraps.

Available in our online store. https://www.turnipgreencreativereuse.org/green-gallery

Becky Dickovitch is a fiber artist and encaustic painter living and working in Murfreesboro, TN. She received her BFA in painting from Middle Tennessee State University in 2011 and teaches encaustic workshops and exhibits her work throughout middle Tennessee. Most recently, she has taught at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN. She has also assisted in many workshops at Arrowmont as well as assisting at Penland School of Crafts in Penland, NC.

Dickovitch explains:

"This body of work is inspired by the relationships, taking up of space, and interconnectedness of daily life, and how we cope with these experiences. We are always attaching ourselves to new people that we meet or situations that arise and building up intricate webs around that relationship, often sacrificing personal space and time. Sometimes we even lose a small part of who we are, only to become a better version of our previous selves. These concepts are explored using thread to fill holes of various sizes and needs and incorporating colors to instill often distinct emotions. The stitched-up holes represent both the new bonds formed and the protective barrier we create around ourselves.

Relying on the repetitive action of stitching forces me to be still and slow down while meditating on emotions, finding balance, and setting boundaries. The excessive amount of thread creates a chaotically calm space that begs to be investigated closer to see what all it has to offer, much like the beginnings of a new relationship.

🎨Green Gallery Artist Feature: *The Story Behind the Art* 🎨

Today's feature is a look at the creative process behind Artist Rebecca Stone and two of her pieces currently being shown in the Green Gallery "Portrait 1" & "Portrait 2" which are made of Canvas, Joint Compound (both upcycled) & Acrylic Paint.

Available in our online store. https://www.turnipgreencreativereuse.org/green-gallery

Rebecca Stone is a professional photographer who spends her downtime painting and creating an assortment of art. Her art has been featured in galleries throughout the United States and Internationally. She received her B.F.A. degree from Texas Woman’s University and an M.T.A. degree from Trevecca Nazarene University. When not expressing herself through her photos and paintings, Rebecca can be found teaching online or paddling on Old Hickory Lake.

Stone explains:

"I believe one way to grow is by stepping outside our comfort zone. I wanted to make paintings with a sculptural feel while appearing simultaneously fragile and cracked. I experimented with different found materials to accomplish this goal. Using thrifted canvases as a base, I combined a half-empty bucket of joint compound from my basement with some acrylic paints I had laying around. I was able to create the mood and texture I wanted, without generating any new waste. These pieces represent my personal push in experimenting in new ways to express emotions through a variety of art media and materials. "

🎨Green Gallery Artist Feature: *The Story Behind the Art* 🎨

Today's feature is a look at Jym Davis one of the artists showing in our Green Gallery this month!

Pictured above is a piece from this month's gallery show "The Encore",
"Sequoia Mask" is made from Paper mache, beads, bells, acrylic, paint rags, and found objects.

Available in our online store. https://www.turnipgreencreativereuse.org/green-gallery

Since 2016, Jym has been a National Park Artist-In-Resident five times: Big Cypress Preserve in Florida, Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, Lassen Volcanic National Park in California, Craters of the Moon Monument in Idaho, and Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. The National Endowment for the Arts featured his National Park art experiences in a 2018 interview. Jym's work reflects his interest in conservation, and 'otherworldly' landscapes, and eccentric folk customs. His wearable art and sculptural masks connect to the animals and landscapes where his artwork was made. His recent exhibitions include Feinkunst-Krueger gallery in Germany, Treat Gallery in NYC, and a 2021 solo show at Day & Night Projects in Atlanta (which at the Atlanta-Journal Constitution noted as a show to “Get Excited About”). Jym Davis is an Associate Professor of Art at Reinhardt University in Georgia, where he heads up the Graphic Design department.

Davis explains:

"I describe my work as personal mythology filtered through ancient folklore. My masks, outfits, and sculptures use the materials of the old customs: ribbons, bells, flowers, horns, and vibrant paints. I am particularly fond of the rich, old traditions of the British Isles which only faintly echo into the American folk customs I grew up with in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. I see my work as an alternate reality, where the old festivals splintered into new forms with different fables. These variant stories are informed by science fiction and an increasingly apocalyptic-looking future."
