🌟 Artist Highlights! 🌟

💖 In keeping with our goal of amplifying the voices of those with chronic conditions, we felt it was important to seek out the works of other artists who also live with chronic illness to honor & highlight the fact that their physical limitations are but one facet of the brilliant, talented, working artists that they are. We're proud to say that the vast majority of people involved with bringing this project to life, both on stage & behind the scenes, are also part of the chronic pain community.

• FALL has collaborated with Timbre on multiple projects in the past & we were thrilled when she gave us permission to use pieces of music in this project.

📸 Photographer Martin O'Connor
• Martin, is a long-time friend & collaborator, not to mention a Nashville icon in dance photography. For this project, Rebekah had an idea for Martin to use his work with light & shadow to capture & honor the bodies of three individuals at different stages on their journey with scoliosis. Those photos will be exhibited at the show, as well being incorporated in other ways throughout the performance.

🩻 "The SpineVine" 🌱
"The idea for an invented aerial apparatus that mirrored my spinal x-rays was in my mind & part of the concept for this piece from the beginning. When I approached friend & metal artist Robert Cortner about helping me make that happen, to his credit, he didn't bat an eye 😁 We had previously worked with Robert on our other invented apparatus (the spaceship kite) & I knew he was up to the challenge. After a couple of tweaks to the design to make sure it was structurally sound for humans to climb on, the SpineVine made it's debut at OZ in 2017." - RHB

🤝 We are so excited to announce our partnership with the Osher Center for Integrative Health at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. This partnership includes an in-office presentation to their medical staff, and invitations to a special performance of "A Bending Of Its Own Kind", followed by a moderated feedback session designed for medical professionals.

🏥 As one of only nine Osher Centers for Integrative Health in the world, their goal is to treat the whole self: mind, body, and spirit, and to share knowledge, resources, and best practices in order to educate medical practitioners.

⚖️ Their mission and ours for this project perfectly align as our ultimate hope is to help build a bridge of empathy between chronic pain patients and their healthcare providers."

"A Bending Of Its Own Kind", a loose translation of the Greek for "idiopathic scoliosis".

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is an abnormal curvature of the spine that appears in late childhood or adolescence. Instead of growing straight, the spine develops a side-to-side curvature, usually in an elongated "S" or "C" shape; the bones of the spine are also slightly twisted or rotated.

Some additional facts:
🩻 AIS is the most common spinal abnormality in children. It affects aprx 4 out of every 100 individuals.
🩻 Scoliosis is a chronic condition, meaning there is no cure. It often involves lifelong treatment.
🩻 AIS is 8 times as often to appear in females than males.
🩻 AIS tends to run in families (but not always).
🩻 Mild scoliosis, a curve of less than 25 degrees, is typically monitored at regular doctor visits to be sure the curve does not get worse.
🩻 Moderate scoliosis, a curve between 25 to 45 degrees, is typically treated with bracing.
🩻 Severe scoliosis, a curve greater than 45 degrees, usually needs surgery. The most common surgical procedure is a spinal fusion. For this procedure, the surgeon uses metal rods, hooks, screws, and wires to correct the spinal curve and secure the spine in a straight position while the fusion heals and becomes solid.
🩻 Although AIS has been known since the time of the ancient Greeks & despite centuries of dedicated research, no distinct cause has been identified.

🌟 5 YEAR NONPROFIT ANNIVERSARY 🌟
5 years ago today we joined the ranks of only a handful of dance-centered nonprofits in Nashville. It has been a bumpy ride, but all the twists & turns have allowed us to step back & evaluate where we've been & where we need to go from here. That appraisal has led to some hard decisions in recent months, but we're trying to move forward with more awareness & a more focused vision.

Thank you to every person that has ever donated to FALL, whether $5 or $5,000. Thank you to everyone who has ever come to see a performance or take an aerial class from us. Thank you to all of our past & current board members. Thank you to all of our collaborators. And last, but most certainly not least, thank you to all of the movement artists who have performed with the company. All of you have been partners in bringing this organization to life.

Our rehearsal last Thursday had to break early for the storm, but not before we had a moment to move with the wind 🍃 while moving outdoors means giving up much of what we associate with traditional rehearsals, it's also given new opportunities for creation and growth.
