Remembering Buddy Holly on his 90th birthday.
(September 7, 1936 – February 3, 1959)

Denny wrote the following post in 2021:
“I was doing my early morning paper round when I saw the headlines-
one of my biggest singer/songwriter influences was gone. That’s when I decided to be yet another torch carrier of his and others I admired. The opening guitar riff of ‘THAT’LL BE THE DAY’ sold me.
He was, and still is, one of the prime influences of our time and I for one will always be grateful for his guidance and honesty as displayed in his timeless works of art.”

From the end of February 2023: Denny just finished his (final) Songs and Stories tour and we were now home for a couple of weeks before we would head to Carnegie Hall in March.
Denny with his buddy, Charley, who was only a few months old at the time.
Missing Denny is an every moment of everyday state of being for me now. Time doesn’t make the grieving go away, it only forces me to learn to live in a different reality. It’s still surreal and painful, but I’m limping along without this wonderful man by my side. I know I’ll see him again one day, but he has sent signs my way❤️🌈🕊️

The early Moody Blues, with 19-year-old Denny Laine, performing the early Laine/ Pinder composition ‘‘Lose Your Money (But Don’t Lose Your Mind) on "Ready Steady Go!" in 1964.

This song, along with their cover version of Bobby Parker’s “Steal Your Heart Away,” was released on this day (Sept 4) in 1964-- the Moody Blues’ first single. Though the "Steal Your Heart Away"/ "Lose Your Money" single release itself didn’t see great chart success, it did bring the Moodies -- who were already going down very well on the live scene -- some early exposure.

After the release, one September 1964 paper reported “If the Moody Blues keep up the cracking pace they have set already, the top spot in the charts will soon be theirs.” And it was, just a few months later, when the A-side of their follow-up single, "Go Now" went up the charts.

A newspaper review of Denny’s Electric String Band, from August 1967. The review mentions the String Band having undergone recent lineup changes, a challenge Denny repeatedly faced in this era mainly due to logistics and scheduling conflicts with the string players from the Royal Academy of Music. Still, the group went down great with their audiences and garnered some very positive reviews in the papers— it was something creative, brave, ambitious, and new at the time to take the amplified orchestral instruments out on the live music scene. To the right of the article is a photo of Denny earlier that same year.

DENNY: “I like to mix genres… You know, I had a string band once, with two violins and two cellos. That was kind of influenced a little bit, like, by George Martin’s influence with the Beatles. But, you know, at the same time it works that you go out and do something a little bit different, and people appreciate that. So, that’s one of the things about playing with these… diverse musicians that I love to do. So, there you go.” — Denny Laine, 2016 interview excerpt
