I just spent the most wonderful month in China, where I met so many kind, generous, supportive and talented artists, made new friends, and completed my residency at Acentric Space Shanghai.
My installation, Release, Rise (《放·升》), was inspired by the historic Fangsheng Bridge in Zhujiajiao.
In Chinese, 放 means to release, let go, or loosen our attachment to inherited structures, expectations, and accumulated memories. 升 means to rise or ascend. Together, they suggest what becomes possible after release: expanded awareness, inner wisdom, and the possibility of transformation.
The project also responds to Zhujiajiao’s waterways, architecture, ecology, and its philosophy of integrating agriculture and education to sustain the prosperity of the town and the continuity of its traditions and cultural richness.
By lifting the river into the air, I hope to make the familiar unfamiliar—to create a space where we can pause, look more deeply, release what we carry, and imagine how we, too, might rise.
