Dr. Trina Harlow - Educator and Artist

Dr. Trina Harlow - Educator and Artist I commuted out of state, driving from my home in Texas to Kansas and then to Arkansas, to work as university faculty for 8 years.

Global Education Influencer | Art Educator | Kansas State University | Univ of Central Arkansas | University of North Texas | Prosper & Van Alstyne ISD | Former NAEA Natl Board of Directors | Artist | Juror In 2024, I retired after 30 years in K-12 art education - 21 years as an art teacher (theatre, journalism, and some other content areas as well, both part time and full time) AND 10 years as un

iversity art education faculty. In 2022-23, I worked as both middle school art teacher and evening university graduate art education faculty so that I could return full time to my home in Texas. I also taught university fiber art and painting studio courses, conducted research that was published into a book and full length documentary film, planned and directed many university events, and taught educators across the United States and world. I also served on the National Art Education Association national board of directors as the higher education director for four years. I founded an organization called Online Art Teachers (K-12) during the pandemic to help art education survive the sudden and swift move to hybrid and remote education. I speak to organizations and schools across the United States, lead workshops both here in the U.S. and internationally, and am greatly enjoying a creative spree in retirement. I am spending much time in my studio painting and tending to fiber arts, as well as teaching workshops.

Today was a pretty monumental day! Today I hung 12 of my paintings at McKinney Art Gallery on the Historic Square in McKinney. Really a dream come true for this 30-year art educator, now a full time painter and stitcher! And, the butterflies that I had in my stomach about being vulnerable and putting my work out there for exposure and critique were greatly calmed when I sold one before I had even finished hanging it; could have sold another but ended up working out a commission with them that is even bigger than the one I had just hung on the wall. The butterflies flew away! I’ll remember this first day forever! What a wonderful group of people and artists, and Justin Zimmerman - the gallery owner - is top notch. Come see us at McKinney Art Gallery! And the other wonderful galleries in McKinney!

What an absolutely beautiful day! Today, I met with Cindy Luvender and Melody Lewis, who chair our Art Club of McKinney Spring Member Show, and Cindy is also our Community Impact Chair (Philanthropy) and Melody is our incoming Corresponding Secretary. We had breakfast at Spoons and visited about the Spring Show! I love all their plans! Then, I enjoyed visiting some art businesses and galleries in the McKinney historic area. And then, I had a delightful meeting at Habitat Plants+Coffee with Cindy Taylor, who is our hardworking newsletter and directory chair, and a highly skilled graphic designer. It was such a wonderful day and I loved all the smiles, ideas, teamwork, and the enthusiasm of these leaders. 2026-2027 here we come!

We had a full kitchen at tonight’s Van Alstyne Arts Commission Spark Session, which we held at the Van Alstyne Historical Museum. This was the second of ten community gatherings that we are holding from May through October to introduce the Arts Commission to residents and gather ideas, and seek out volunteers. We are also searching for a physical home for the Arts Commission! So many great ideas shared this evening!

Today I had the most amazing Zoom with the one and only Dionne Woods aka The Turquoise Iris and a couple other artists and art business owners that I met up in Madison, Indiana a couple weeks ago and became such good friends with. Just wowza. Dionne is a very special mentor. Still seems just unreal to me that this very special artist and mentor is in my life now. She is absolutely amazing and giving me so much to think about…..but also helping me to just think more clearly. As did all of the speakers at ReBloom. I should have taken pics of our Zoom but was too busy smiling!

Today at the Van Alstyne Public Library, Judy Womack and I had a fantastic meeting about the VA Arts Commission with the Library Director, Judy Kimzey, and also with Misty Terry, the Adult & Special Collections Librarian. And we got a sneak peek of the library renovations! So exciting!
