Governor Newsom said it best: the arts bring people together, strengthen our communities, and help power California’s economy. We couldn’t agree more.

Thank you, Governor, for supporting the arts and recognizing their positive impact across California.

50 years ago, Governor Jerry Brown helped launch the California Arts Council. As we celebrate its 50th year, let’s honor that vision by investing in the next 50 years.

We encourage the Governor to include $50 million for the California Arts Council in the May Revise.

This milestone year gives Governor Newsom a chance to help ensure another 50 years of creativity, opportunity, and cultural leadership in California.

Let’s work together to leave a lasting legacy.

Creativity is human-fueled— and it belongs to all of us.

At a time when AI depends on human imagination, we must invest in the people who make creativity possible. Artists fuel the ideas, stories, and cultural knowledge that drive innovation across California's technology and creative economies. If technology profits from human creativity, our communities deserve a return on that imagination.

And the creative sector goes far beyond the canvas or the stage. Artists have pioneered community-led solutions to housing, transportation, and environmental sustainability — helping us understand complex challenges and imagine new paths forward. They are a vital workforce. A cornerstone industry. A living engine of California's economy and spirit.

As the California Arts Council marks its 50th year, join us in calling for $50 million in funding. Because a boundless California — innovative, equitable, and deeply human — begins with the freedom to create.

Art has always been the hammer that shapes democracy.

Through murals, music, poetry, theater, and performance, artists give voice to the hopes, struggles, and dreams of our communities. They inspire civic participation, confront injustice, and hold open the space where change becomes imaginable. In our darkest moments, artists help us see past the present — and take action toward a better future.

Creative expression is also part of a broader industry that needs support like any small business. Art work is real work — and the performing arts are a real workforce. Small, community-based theaters are where local stories live, emerging artists are trained, and communities gather to see themselves on stage. Post-COVID, many are still fighting to survive.

Workforce policy is inseparable from broader cultural policy. The Performing Arts Equitable Payroll Fund (PAEPF) helps community theaters stay afloat — offsetting payroll costs so artists can keep creating and small theaters don't go dark. In its first year, PAEPF revealed an unmet need of $40 million. The demand is real. The gap is urgent.

Join us in calling for $40 million to recommit to the PAEPF — to protect arts workers, stabilize the industry, and keep California's stages alive for the stories that shape our future.

When we fund the arts, we strengthen the equality, representation, and freedom that define our democracy.

Culture is power — and it is medicine.

When artists and culture bearers help communities reclaim their stories, something profound happens: neighborhoods grow stronger, people heal, and local pride becomes a foundation for collective action. That's not a metaphor. Arts programming demonstrably improves health outcomes, keeps youth engaged in school, anchors housing stability, and builds the sense of place that makes a community worth advocating for.

Creativity cannot thrive on scarcity — and neither can the communities that depend on it.

As the California Arts Council marks its 50th year, join us in calling for $50 million in funding. Because investing in arts and culture means investing in the health, resilience, and boundless future of every Californian.
