ICAA MN Monthly Sketching Series*

Join the ICAA Chicago-Midwest Chapter's Minnesota Subcommittee for our monthly sketching series. This series brings together local architects, designers, artists, and enthusiasts to draw from observation at historically and architecturally significant locations throughout the Twin Cities.

Drawing on the principles of classical draftsmanship, these gatherings follow in the great tradition of creatives who have studied the built environment through direct observation — because to draw is to truly see. Each session is led by a local ICAA member and includes a brief discussion on materials, choice of subject, and foundational skills such as perspective, composition, and the relationship between the built and natural landscape.

All experience levels are warmly welcomed. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner or new to sketching, these sessions offer an opportunity to develop your eye, connect with fellow classicists, and deepen your appreciation for the architecture and urban fabric of our region.

We meet on the last Saturday of each month from 3–5pm at rotating locations around the Twin Cities. Participants are invited to continue the conversation over drinks at a no-host happy hour following each gathering.

This was a fun collaboration!

Mary's original 20 x 30" oil painting, "River Memories", was transformed into the large mural seen on their building.

Congratulations, Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours, on 120 years of river memories!

Two people. One canvas. Everything left unsaid.

“Denise and Jim” by Steven Assael is the kind of painting that stops you — painted from life, with the precision of an Old Master and the intimacy of a moment you weren’t meant to witness.

Available now through Gallery 366. Whether you’re looking to acquire a work like this or explore what’s possible for your collection, JNK Art Partners is here to help — buying and selling fine art is what we do.

Pleased to share that "Stewart" by Steven Assael has been purchased.

A figurative oil painting of quiet, commanding power - it is the kind of work that commands a room and opens a conversation.

Steven Assael is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished figurative painters of his generation. His paintings are held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, among others.

A curated selection of Steven's work remains on view at Gallery 366 in Minneapolis. Through JNK Fine Art Consulting, I also have access to a broader range of his collection for clients pursuing meaningful acquisitions — whether for a private residence, a corporate space, or a significant collection.

If you are working on a space or collection and have been looking for work that truly stops people in their tracks, I'd welcome the conversation.

What a weekend.

Thank you to everyone who came through Gallery 366 during Art-A-Whirl® — for your time, your curiosity, and your warmth.

Art is most alive when it's shared. This weekend was proof of that.

For those who didn't make it — the gallery continues. The artists remain. The work is here.

Come find us.

✦ SOLD ✦ "Stewart" by Steven Assael

This painting stopped everyone who stood in front of it.

A bare-shouldered man emerges from a near-black ground, his gaze steady and direct, his face carrying the full complexity of a life — dignity, vulnerability, and quiet intensity held in a single moment. The light falls on him with warmth and precision, giving him an almost sculptural presence. It is the kind of painting that pulls you in and keeps you there.

Steven Assael paints the people the art world often overlooks. He doesn't idealize them. He simply sees them — fully, honestly, and without flinching — and invites us to do the same.

"Stewart" has found its home with a private collector. It is the kind of work that will live beautifully on a wall for generations.

A selection of Steven's work is on view in Gallery 366. Additional works from his collection are also available through JNK Fine Art Consulting — for collectors and design professionals seeking something truly extraordinary.
