Oh Wow! Here’s a throwback—a friend just sent me these pics which I haven’t seen in over 25 years.

We had a “warm spell” at the end of January and thought Winter Wakeboarding would make a good story submission for so we loaded Dan Lee’s 19’ Malibu Echelon with bins of steaming hot water and launched onto the Mississippi from South St. Paul. Closed-toe bindings were not a thing yet so we used baseless snowboard bindings and presoaked our boots in the rapidly cooling ballast water. It was like riding wearing 10lb ankle weights. Watching my friend Ryan Keifer slide down the snowy river bank across ice into open water to start his run was worth the case of pneumonia that almost took me out, and laying out this Tantrum is still one of the most memorable double-ups of my life. ( never published the story.)

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it … I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, ‘Dear Jim: I loved your card’. Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said ‘Jim loved your card so much he ate it’. That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.“ -Maurice Sendak

Brought a little light to grieving littles at Anderson Funeral Home with this “Where The Wild Things Are” mural painted in 2009, but after 15 years of love (wear-and-tear) it deserved a fresh once-over.
