One year ago (yesterday), I released two versions of my single “Lungs of a Legend”. I couldn’t decide which I liked more, so instead of doing a standard version and calling the more pop one a remix, I released them simultaneously and called them both “versions.”
When I sat down to write it, I remember trying to imagine what would sound good with Kelly Clarkson’s vocals if she were belting it out on a Kellyoke segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show. That was literally the creative spark behind the “Band Version”. It’s also the reason I released a dropped a karaoke video on YouTube!
The night I recorded it in my room, I did it in two takes. Right after finishing, my stepmom called to tell me my paternal grandmother had passed away. I’d like to think maybe I was being spiritually supported in some way, because to this day it remains the easiest song that just flowed out of me - despite being one of my more vocally challenging songs. It was also new exploring a completely different sound that felt raw and less produced.
Anyway, I genuinely love both interpretations for different reasons, but the “Dance Version” took on a whole different life of its own… and somehow went on to become one of my top performing streaming songs (currently my 2nd most streamed song on Spotify). To this day, it remains one of my favorite tracks. I can’t wait till one day do a music video for it.
Crazy it’s been a year. If you ever streamed it, shared it, or supported it in any way - thank you. It means more than you know.
