Played with strands of wool or twine manipulated through a sequence of hand movements, the game functions as both a physical exercise and a conceptual framework for thinking about memory, time, and intergenerational knowledge. In the gallery, El Catre shifts from game to formal investigation: using a sewing machine..."

Inside the practice of Erina Libertad erinalibertad

The Costa Rica based multidisiplinary artist moves between performance, dance, installation, choreography, and costume design, creating immersive environments that heighten awareness of the body in relation to material, space, and other people.

Her solo exhibition, Lo que queda (What Remains), opens at HSC&A on Saturday, June 20. Developed for the gallery over several weeks, the show centers on El Catre, a thread-based game Libertad learned from her grandmother. Through video, textiles, photography, and vinyl floor applications, she translates the game into a participatory environment, asking how memory is held and transformed through gesture, shared experience, and the body itself.

HSC&A Artist Spotlight / Erina Libertad

Erina Libertad (b. 1986) is a Costa Rica based artist whose practice moves fluidly between performance, dance, installation, choreography, research, and visual arts. She designs costumes for the performing arts and film, and runs her independent project TAXI. She also facilitates movement-based workshops that use play as a way of reconnecting people with creativity, the body, and its possibilities.

At the center of her work is an invitation to rediscover play, both for its creative potential and as a quiet rebellion against systems that thrive on our disconnection, our exhaustion, and the absence of laughter and pleasure. Her practice opens a door and asks where the game might take us.
Libertad is a co-founder of Cero Uno, an artist-run space in San José, Costa Rica known for its commitment to contemporary artist residencies and bold multidisciplinary exhibitions.

Her solo exhibition ‘Lo que queda (What Remains)’ opens Saturday, June 20 at HSC&A. Join us for an opening reception and artist-led walkthrough on Saturday, June 20 from 3 - 5 PM.

HSC&A is pleased to announce Erina Libertad: What Remains / Lo Que Queda, a site-specific installation and exhibition featuring video, photography, textile, rope, and vinyl work, opening Saturday, June 20th at our Mid-City location.

The exhibition centers on El Catre, a string game taught to Libertad by her 95-year-old grandmother. Through repetition, tension, and the quiet labor of intergenerational transmission, the work considers what persists across time: memory, gesture, the act of teaching, the threads passed from one hand to the next.

Erina Libertad (b. 1986, San José, Costa Rica), is a trained dancer, whose interdisciplinary practice bridges movement, play, memory, visual art and experiential interventions. In 2025 her site-specific and participatory work was featured at both el Museo de Arte Costarricense (MAC) and Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo (MADC) in San José, Costa Rica. What Remains / Lo Que Queda, marks the artist’s debut solo exhibition in the United States.
