Mud making Magic: A Community Mural Project

Mud making Magic: A Community Mural Project THE METUCHEN ARTS COUNCIL invited everyone who wished to help create a ceramic mural to cover the en https://youtu.be/RySJcYjjl-E

This project allowed everyone who wished to create an original tile for a section of the mural, each wall of which reflected one season of the year. We developed the mural on one wall each year, beginning with "Summer" in 2014. This first mural incorporated images and words specific to "summer in Metuchen;” a series of learning / working sessions took place every weekend for each subsequent March

2014 through 2017 at the Senior Center. The project was led and overseen by ceramic artist Linda Vonderschmidt-LaStella (Earthsongs Ceramic Studio, Metuchen). She developed the overall design, fired and glazed the work. Once the paper cartoon of the design was completed, the shape of each section was traced on slabs of clay, irregular shapes of roughly 12"x12". For $25 (to pay for materials and firing) each participant received one of those shapes to sculpt, impress and create their own original section. A six-minute presentation was given at a Pechakucha Night in New Hope, PA.
