School hours. When parents aren't allowed past the office.

Her "volunteering"? Sitting in her car in the parking lot, "on call" for the pickup line.

I climbed, sweating, cursing her name with every step.

The door opened.

A kid. Maybe nine. Home alone.

"Are you the delivery guy? Mom said don't open the door for anyone but you."

He'd been texting "OMW" for fifteen minutes because he was scared to take the stairs alone.

I carried the bags in. Checked the locks twice.
"Tell your mom you're brave."

He grinned. "Can I give you five stars?"
