“THE PRODUCER’S POINT OF VIEW”

How to Evoke Emotions

Mixing for me is very visual.

For me, production is about colors, shades of life, feeling and memory. I discovered my mixing sound through film, especially the classic movies I grew up watching.

Here are 5 ways I think about evoking emotion through sound:

1. START WITH THE FEELING

Know the emotion you want the listener to experience.

2. SEE THE SOUND

Think in colors and shades. Every sound can contribute to the emotional picture.

3. CREATE NOSTALGIA

The right sound can take a listener back to a place and time.

4. UNDERSTAND PLACEMENT

With mixing, microphone placement is everything. The mic doesn’t have to be expensive.

5. QUALITY MATTERS

Production is about making intentional choices that allow the listener to experience the emotion.

Music isn’t just about what the audience hears.

It’s about what the audience feels.
