FROM THE PRODUCER’S PEN

Jamon Jones: Presets & Vocal Chains

When you find a vocal chain that works, sometimes the best thing you can do is leave it alone.

I’ve developed a core vocal chain that I return to with every artist, not because every voice is the same, but because the foundation works. From EQ and compression to saturation, tone shaping, stereo reverbs, delays, doubling and smoothing, each element has a purpose. The effects are then EQ’d and adjusted to complement the individual vocal.

As producers, we can easily overthink and over-process. We’re always chasing today’s sound, experimenting with new ideas and challenging ourselves creatively. And creativity has no ceiling.

My wife and fellow Co-Founder of Motes Jones & Company will sometimes listen and say:

“Baby…leave it just like that.”

I value her ear as a professional producer and songwriter. But the composer in me will still experiment, only to find myself coming right back to the original chain.

Because when you’ve found it, you’ve just found it.
