Youth Symphony Alumnus James Dyson and special guests will be presenting a FREE one-hour, family-friendly concert at 7PM on Friday, July 31 at Southern Oregon University's Music Recital Hall, 450 South Mountain Avenue, in Ashland. In addition to music by Chopin and Bach, the concert will feature the premiere of an arrangement of "Kirby’s Return to Dreamland" by James. The members of the Dyson Family will join James in the performance. Pianist Teagan Calkins will participate in the concert as well.
James was diagnosed with stage 4 lymphoma when he was a junior at Ashland High School. After two courses of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, he achieved remission a year later. Currently, James is majoring in music performance at Princeton University and will be attending the Royal College of Music in London this fall.
James is presenting the performance to raise awareness about childhood cancer in support of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. James’ Wish for a contrabassoon was granted in 2023 while he was undergoing chemotherapy. James will never forget the gift of hope his Wish brought him. He wants to share that hope with other children and families in crisis.
