Go Tell It On the Mountain

Traditional arr. by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel

Merry Christmas! I think this is a time when we all reflect on our faith and the origins of it. For me, playing religious music was the first time I learned to be a member of a group, listen to others, and play something that sounds good, and not just impressive. Although my faith is still the biggest part of my life, as it relates to music, I am sad to think that the combination of decreasing church attendance and consolidation of neighborhood churches into mega-churches has taken away the opportunity for a lot of people to be exposed to the joy and challenge of playing music. I’m not sure we’ll ever rewind the clock when it comes to this topic, but maybe we can all try to let our faith and music bring us together in new ways.

Heartache Tonight - Henley, Frey, Seger, and Souther

Anyone who knows both of us will tell you that no one has shaped me more than my dad.

If you saw my last post, I mentioned that classic rock was always big in our house. When my parents got me my first guitar for my 14th birthday, I started paying attention to how that music was made for the first time. This song stands out in my memory for two reasons; anyone who knows my dad knows he loves Eagles, and second, this song was the most fun I remember having in my 8th-grade trombone days.

Oo-De-Lally - Roger Miller

I often wonder how people develop their taste in music.

I wasn’t really raised on folk music, in our house it was mostly classic rock and contemporary Christian music. Maybe there is some argument to be made that we all resist our parents’ music because it’s “uncool”, but I don’t think that tells the whole story, because I still enjoy and listen to those genres. Still, nothing has ever grabbed my attention and held it as long as folk music has. It might be because there is something appealing about a style of music that has such a deep history and still invites anyone and everyone to contribute to the next chapter. It might be that the sound of my voice predisposed me to attaching myself to other singers who “can’t sing”. But I think the most likely explanation is that my favorite movie in our VCR collection was Disney’s Robin Hood.
