It was an incredible evening from start to finish—thought-provoking, beautifully performed, and deeply engaging. Thank you to Dr. Rachel Franklin for setting the stage with a fascinating pre-concert lecture, and to our outstanding artists: pianist Joseph Holt, violinist Boram Kang, cellist Dariusz Skoraczewski, and soprano Catherine Wethington. What a lineup—and what a performance.

Congratulations to all, and thank you to our artists, partners, and everyone who joined us—we’re so grateful you were part of it.

BIG NEWS: This Sunday marks the U.S. premiere of "Phacelia" by Sofia Gubaidulina, sung by soprano Catherine Wethington!

Get to know the composer behind the special and rarely-heard music:

Widely regarded as one of the most important Russian composers of her time, Gubaidulina (1931–2025) created music shaped by deep spiritual conviction and a profound curiosity about human existence. Her work centers on transformation—how music can illuminate the inner life.

In the Soviet era, that vision came at a cost. Her deeply religious, experimental style clashed with state ideology, leading to her denunciation in 1979 as part of the “Khrennikov Seven” and the effective banning of her music. Yet that marginalization also gave her an unexpected freedom: to compose without compromise.

After decades of suppression, she moved to Germany in 1992 and went on to international acclaim—her voice unmistakable, her integrity unwavering.

✨ Phacelia, an early work written in 1956 and based on a poem by Mikhail Prishvin, already reveals the seeds of her distinctive style—introspective, searching, and spiritually resonant.

Esteemed violinist Boram Kang began her musical journey at the age of five. Her early training included study with Leri Slutsky of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, a distinguished second violinist with the BSO for more than 25 years.

She went on to earn degrees from the Peabody Conservatory and the Eastman School of Music, building a foundation that launched a dynamic career performing with leading orchestras across the country. Her appearances have included major stages such as the National Symphony Orchestra and the Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center.

Today, Kang serves as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Acting Assistant Concertmaster. She recently also appeared as concertmaster for EGC Productions’ Journey of Faith: A Musical Tribute to Mother Teresa, further showcasing the breadth of her artistry and leadership on stage.

On May 3, Censored Voices: Silent No More features Boram in a program of masterworks by Russian composers who faced oppression in their lifetimes.

Her inspired playing helps bring forward stories that demand to be heard—where technical mastery meets emotional truth.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra audiences know the sound—rich, expressive, unmistakable.

On May 3, "Censored Voices: Silent No More" features Dariusz Skoraczewski, Principal Cellist of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, whose “lush tone” and “expressive style” have made him one of the region’s most admired musicians.

From major concert halls across the U.S., Europe, and Asia to intimate chamber settings here in Baltimore, Skoraczewski brings both virtuosity and depth to every performance. His artistry spans centuries—from Bach to bold contemporary voices—and always with a singular clarity of expression.

In Censored Voices, his playing becomes part of something larger: a program that gives voice to stories once silenced.
