β¨ Tell the Story Tuesday: Walk Into the Room Anyway
Some of the best opportunities in my life have come from walking into rooms where I didn't know anybody.
One of my most recent experiences with this happened when I attended a conference in Scottsdale.
Sarah Anne, entrepreneur and author of Million Dollar Groups, was the main speaker. I'd been following her on social media for a while, but we'd never met.
I happened to show up early.
Sarah noticed me almost immediately, walked over, gave me a hug, and introduced herself.
I happened to have some copies of my book with me, so I gave her a signed copy and we took a picture together.
Already pretty freaking cool. π
But that wasn't the connection from that room that would end up changing things for me.
At the same conference, I noticed two women who were VERY sparkly. β¨π
They sat down in the row in front of me.
Those women were Keely and Alora from Sparkle Party.
Then Alora noticed my water bottle.
I had empowering stickers all over it, and apparently that was enough to start a conversation.
She sat down next to me.
We started chatting.
That's it.
No elaborate networking strategy.
No perfectly rehearsed elevator pitch.
No master plan.
A water bottle started the conversation. π
Keely and Alora invited me to a Sparkle Party event.
I went.
And the rest is history.
They became my first introduction to microstages, short speaking opportunities that gave me another way to get onstage, share my message, practice speaking, and connect with people.
And now?
I'm addicted. π
But here's what I keep thinking about...
None of that happens if I don't walk into that original room.
I don't meet Sarah.
I don't meet Keely and Alora.
Alora doesn't notice my water bottle.
There's no conversation.
There's no Sparkle Party invitation.
There's no introduction to microstages.
And who knows how many other opportunities and relationships have come from the ripple effects of those connections?
That's the thing about walking into a new room.
You have absolutely no idea what might be waiting for you inside.
A friend.
A client.
A mentor.
A collaborator.
An invitation.
An idea.
An opportunity.
A completely different direction.
Or maybe simply one conversation that makes you think differently.
You don't know.
And sometimes walking through that door is uncomfortable.
You don't know anybody.
Everyone else looks like they already have friends.
You wonder where you're supposed to sit.
You suddenly become VERY interested in your phone because standing there alone feels awkward. π
I get it.
Walk into the room anyway.
You don't have to be the loudest person there.
You don't have to work the entire room.
You don't have to hand everyone your business card.
Sometimes you just need to show up early...
Sit down...
Be approachable...
And have some interesting stickers on your water bottle. π
Because sometimes the room you're afraid to enter is exactly the room you need to be in.
β¨ You can't meet the people who could change your life if you never walk into the room where they're waiting.
So here's my question for you:
What room have you been afraid to walk into?
The conference?
The networking event?
The mastermind?
The class?
The stage?
The group where you don't know anybody?
And maybe the bigger question is:
How could your life change if you walked into it anyway? π
