This piece was a bit of an experiment for me — I painted the whole thing with a palette knife, which is not how I usually work 🐼🌿.

I’m learning that a new tool can change everything: the texture, the movement, even the way I make decisions. It definitely asked me to loosen up and trust the process a little more than usual.

Progress doesn’t always look polished while it’s happening. Sometimes it looks like trying something new and letting the painting teach you as you go. I incorporated some feedback from my previous version that suggested the background was competing with the pandas. I toned it down and also added some warm colors to the mama panda 🎨✨.

My first mixed media portrait using encaustic wax. Can you see the underlayers of maps and images? It's a long way from perfect, but I think that's part of the charm. I'm doing a series of four of these to add to the eight 6" x 6" tiles for the upcoming Art Squared exhibition in September.
