Last night was a little different for us. 😉

We were privately hired by one of the regulars at Head Up Here in Kankakee, as basically a thank-you to the bar and its owner for everything they do. The bar was still open to the public, but the show wasn't advertised, so we really had no idea what kind of night we were walking into. 😆🤷🏼‍♀️

And what a GREAT spot.

Now listen... I've lived in Kankakee for ten years. I've probably driven past this place a million times and never gave it a second thought. It's tucked away on one of those streets you probably wouldn't find yourself on unless you had a reason to be there. But apparently the locals know exactly what they've got, because the people who go there seem fiercely fond of this place. And after spending a night there, we TOTALLY get why.

Out back is this gorgeous deck/beer garden with a pergola over part of it, and it's one of those hidden little spaces you would NEVER know was there from driving past the building.

We also have to give a special shout-out to Frank for recommending us to Tommy in the first place. Tommy and Head Up Here essentially took a chance on us without ever having heard us play.

We also got a chance to meet and chat with Derek, the owner, who could not have been nicer or more welcoming. It didn't take long to understand why people seem to have so much love for this place.

And of course, a little love for our bartender Laura, who happens to be a good friend of mine and took very good care of us 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

The weather was absolutely perfect. It was an intimate little crowd. Mostly just whoever happened to be hanging out at the bar that night.

And we don't know what got into us, but we were on FIRE. 🔥🔥🔥😂

Maybe we were just itching to play. Maybe it was the weather. Maybe it was because the people who were there were so receptive. Probably all of the above. But the energy between us and that little crowd was just fantastic.

And that's something we're really starting to love about doing this. Sometimes it's not the giant stage or the packed room or the big advertised show. Sometimes it's stumbling into a little place you've passed a hundred times, playing for the people who already know and love it, and walking away thinking...

How did we not know this was here?

Head Up Here Pub, you are one heck of a hidden little Kankakee gem.

Thank you to Tommy for taking a chance on us, Frank for putting our name out there, Derek and everyone at Head Up Here for welcoming us, and everyone who spent their Saturday night hanging out with us.

We really, really hope we get to do this one again. ❤️

Once upon a time, I used to come on here after every gig and give you guys a little recap of the night before. The good, the bad, the ugly, the ridiculous, and everything in between.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped doing that.

I don't know why, because honestly? I miss it.

We get to play some really cool places and meet some REALLY cool people doing this, and I think the venues that welcome us deserve their flowers. And maybe some other band scrolling by will discover a place they never would've thought to check out.

Or maybe I just like to talk. 🤷‍♀️
Whatever. We're bringing it back. 😂

So let's talk about Sheldon, IL

People... DO NOT SLEEP ON SHELDON, ILLINOIS.

Last night, Sheldon came out HARD.

First of all, Donohue Package Store is like walking into a time capsule. If I'm not mistaken, this place has been around since somewhere in the 1950s, it's still family-owned, and I swear it's one of the coolest little one-stop shops you'll ever stumble across. It's the kind of place you could easily drive right past and have absolutely no idea what you're missing.

The place itself has character for DAYS.

But the people?.. deep breath y'all...

The people take it to an entirely different level.

Sheldon... Y'all are UNHINGED. 😂😂😂
And I mean that with every ounce of love in my body.

Sheldon knows how to PARTY. They dance. They sing. They holler. They love their music. They definitely love themselves a good drink. 😂 And they have absolutely ZERO hesitation about showing a band exactly how much fun they're having.

And THAT is the kind of crowd we live for.

We had an absolute blast last night. The energy was fire, the people were vivacious, the place was iconic, and we genuinely cannot wait to come back and do it all over again.

So here's to Sheldon, Illinois. 🍻
