My daughter's classmates whispered at prom when the most popular boy asked her to dance even though she was in a wheelchair — then the principal took the mic and said WORDS that made everyone fall silent.
My daughter, Nora, had dreamed about prom since she was twelve years old.
She couldn't wait to wear her prettiest dress and spend the night dancing.
But that wasn't possible anymore.
About a year and a half ago, she was diagnosed with cancer.
She has gone through several surgeries, and we're still fighting for her life.
She can no longer move around on her own, so she uses a wheelchair and a portable oxygen machine to help her breathe.
She also spent most of her senior year being homeschooled.
But Nora still had one dream left — to at least see prom.
So I decided to take her there.
Nora was overjoyed.
She said:
"Mom, this is the best gift ever!"
But the moment we entered the venue, her classmates started whispering.
Some avoided Nora so they wouldn't have to take pictures with her.
Others seemed confused about why she had even come.
Then the slow dance began.
That's when Jude walked over. He was probably the most popular boy in school. The one every girl dreamed about. The football star.
He held out his hand and asked Nora to dance.
Nora happily said yes.
He wheeled her onto the dance floor and danced with her.
Everyone in the room turned to watch.
Some classmates started calling out comments:
"JUDE, COULDN'T YOU HAVE ASKED SOMEONE ELSE?"
Or:
"DOES SHE REALLY BELONG ON THE DANCE FLOOR?"
Tears filled Nora's eyes.
I had already stepped onto the dance floor, ready to take her home.
But suddenly, the school principal, Mr. Green, approached me and said:
"Please wait just five more minutes. Don't leave."
Then he walked onto the stage and stopped the music.
Mr. Green picked up the mic and said:
"Attention, everyone! I NEED ALL OF YOU TO LISTEN CAREFULLY."
As he continued speaking, I saw SHOCK spread across every face in the room.
And I held my breath. ⬇️
