Last night, my family and I treated ourselves to Jeff Ruby’s Carlo & Johnny and went all-in on the $70 special: a filet, lobster tail, mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a small salad.

I hadn’t been back in about two years, but every previous visit left me impressed. The service was still top-notch and the dining room looked absolutely immaculate.

Unfortunately, that’s where the magic stopped. The lobster, potatoes, asparagus, and salad were all solid, and the filet came out perfectly medium-rare just the way I ordered it. But the steak itself? Surprisingly tough, with way more connective tissue than I’d ever expect from a place with Carlo & Johnny’s reputation. It just wasn’t the tender, melt-in-your-mouth experience I was counting on.

For a $70 special at a high-end steakhouse, I expected better. This one didn’t live up to the Jeff Ruby’s standard I’ve always loved. Has anyone else noticed a change in their steaks lately, or did I just catch an off night? Genuinely curious—because I’ve had some truly great meals here before.
