Before you toss that little paper scrap, take another look. 👀

Even the tiniest pieces can become miniature books, collage layers, pockets, titles, or decorative details for your next handmade book.

Swipe through for 5 simple ways to put those leftover bits to good use—and maybe justify keeping that ever-growing scrap pile. 😉

Your handmade journal doesn’t need to sit on a shelf waiting for the “perfect” idea.

Let it become your summer travel journal, garden log, beach sketchbook, reading list, or a place to tuck away tiny scraps from ordinary days.

On the blog, we’re sharing simple ways to use a handmade journal for your summer adventures — smudges, crooked sketches, taped-in receipts and all.

Bookbinding tip: test your stitching on a scrap first.

Before you sew into your final cover or signatures, try the stitch pattern on a piece of scrap cardboard. It gives you a chance to practice the path of the thread, check your spacing, and work out any “wait… where does the needle go next?” moments before you’re working on the real thing.

A little scrap test can save a lot of unpicking later. 😉

What exactly is an artist book?

Sometimes it looks like a traditional book. Sometimes it folds, stretches, spills open, or turns into something delightfully unexpected — like this incredible toaster-inspired artist book by Karen Beal Crosby.

We recently had a guest artist session inside the Handmade Book Club where Karen shared several of her artist books with us, and we were left completely 🤯. Her work was playful, thoughtful, surprising, and such a wonderful reminder that a book can be so much more than pages between covers.

That session helped spark this month’s club project: Artist Books with a theme: Beverages.

Tea, coffee, cocktails, lemonade, cocoa, favorite mugs, family recipes, café memories, morning rituals… we cannot wait to see where our members take this prompt. Tiny books, sculptural books, illustrated books, books that fold out, tuck away, or tell a story one little detail at a time — it’s all welcome!

That’s the magic of artist books. They invite us to think beyond “what a book is supposed to be” and ask, instead:

What could this become?

Want to explore bookmaking in a creative, supportive community? We’d love to have you join us inside the Handmade Book Club. ✨

Bookbinding tools can be a little overwhelming.

Do you need the fancy bone folder?
Which awl should you buy?
What kind of needle works best?
Is that tool actually useful, or does it just look very official sitting on your desk?

I’ve been there.

That’s why we asked Paper & Ink Arts to put together two Handmade Book Club tool bundles based on the supplies I reach for again and again.

The Basic Bookbinding Bundle is a great starting point if you’re building your first toolkit.

The Premium Bookbinding Bundle includes a few more specialized favorites for makers who are ready to grow their setup.

Both bundles were created to help take some of the guesswork out of gathering tools — so you can spend less time wondering what to buy and more time making books.

Available now through Paper & Ink Arts and John Neal Books.

One structure. So many beautiful interpretations. ✨

This month inside the Handmade Book Club, members have been working on the Art of the Hinge project with artist-in-residence Bari Zaki, and I’m totally taken with the variety in these finished books.

The covered spines, the ties, the papers, the textures, the quiet little details… each one has its own personality.

That’s one of my favorite things about bookbinding. Everyone can begin with the same set of instructions, but once paper choices, fabric, thread, color, and personal style come into the mix, no two books ever feel the same.

If you’ve been wanting to build your bookbinding skills with thoughtful projects, clear instruction, and plenty of inspiration from other makers, we’d love to have you join us inside the Handmade Book Club.

I saw this quote and immediately thought about bookbinding.

So many people tell me they tried to make a handmade book once, but it fell apart… or the stitches were confusing… or the diagram made no sense… or they got halfway through and shoved the whole thing into a drawer.

But I don’t think that means they failed. It usually means the instructions failed them.

Bookbinding can feel complicated, especially when you’re trying to piece it together from scattered tutorials, confusing diagrams, and advice that assumes you already know the basics.

That’s why I created the Handmade Book Club: to make bookbinding feel clear, doable, and encouraging.

Because you don’t need 10,000 ways that won’t work. Join us inside the Handmade Book Club and learn to make books one clear step at a time.

Over the years, I’ve bought quite a few bookbinding tools that I thought I “needed” — only to later realize they didn’t really fit the kind of books I actually love making.

Some I bought too early.

Some were cheaper versions that ended up being false economy.

And some are tools I still use constantly and would buy again in a heartbeat.

This Thursday at noon EST, I’ll be going live to talk about the lessons I’ve learned along the way and what I’d recommend for beginners now.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by bookbinding tools, supplies, conflicting advice, or wondered where to even begin, I think this conversation will help.
