Handel Aria Competition The Handel Aria Competition is an event for emerging talented singers of Handel's operas and oratorios.

The inaugural Handel Aria Competition took place on Monday, July 8, 2013 in the Humanities Building on the UW campus. The concert was free and open to the public, and featured the 8 finalists selected from a field of 48 singers from across the US and Canada who auditioned. Since then the event has grown every year, with over 150 applicants from around the world. Visit our web site for details and

Past winners of the Opera division have frequently performed works by George Frideric Handel. Because the Liederkranz Foundation and the Gerda Lissner Foundation attract premier, world-class emerging artists, many of their winners are sought-after soloists who perform in Handel's operas and oratorios on major international stages. Handel Aria Competition first prize winner Joanne Evans was a finalist in this event.

2026–27 SEASON PREVIEW: Celebrate the season with one of classical music's most beloved holiday traditions. The KSO presents Handel's timeless Messiah, featuring soprano Song Hee Lee, mezzo-soprano Emily Marvosh, tenor Brian Giebler, bass-baritone Kevin Burdette, and the Knoxville Choral Society.

We are so fortunate to have the Madison Bach Musicians, with Craig Trompeter of Haymarket Opera Company as guest cellist, providing accompaniment in the Handel Aria Competition. This year engraver Patrick T. Waters had his hands full providing new instrumental parts, as many of the finalists selected pieces that had not been sung for our event before. Special thanks to Madison Bach Musicians artistic director and harpsichordist Trevor Stephenson and assistant artistic director and violinist Kangwon Lee Kim for all they do to make the singers feel confident that their performance will be excellent. Micah Behr on viola and Benjamin Lenzmeirer on violin complete this ensemble of musicians, all playing on period instruments to accompany the finalists. đź“· Lewis Photography
